Temp problems, 95 cord
Vehicle: 1995 accord, 2.2L, V-tech, 130,000k miles.
Problems/Symptoms: My car stopped blowing hot air when heater was on. During this time, the car also started running very cold -- This was noticed because the temp gauge barely made it off of the blue section at the bottom of the gauge -- so I deduced the engine wasn't running at proper temp or bad gauge, but engine temp was more likely since heater wasn't blowing hot.
To remedy this, I put a new thermostat in (used a superstat) and did a radiator flush. After this, the temp gauge now reads an appropriate temp--needle sits right under the half way mark when engine is at running temp. Heater also began blowing hot air--not reallly hot, but much better than before, which was just luke-warm air.
However, the thermostat never wanted to open up for me! It was installed correctly, but wouldn't open for like 30 minutes of the car running and revving engine when put in. And still even after pretty long drives, I will feel bottom radiator hose and it's not hot, while the top one gets really hot.
So the thermostat doesn't seem to be opening up correctly (I'm assuming?), but the temp gauge says the engine is at a proper temp...Not sure what to make of this, so appreciate you thoughts.

Is it puking coolant when it's shut off? Do you have to keep filling it up? The prob with the heater could be that the on/off valve in the heater line might no be all the way open, or the cable came off, if the car isn't losing coolant it sounds like the stat is working right

The OE temperature for your thermostat to open is 170, I'd pull it and look inside the casing to find the temperature that that thermostat is rated at to be sure you got the right one.The one you have could be 180 or 195.
Also, it should be around 38 percent of the way up the gauge assuming it's reading correctly. Your car could just be not getting hot enough to open the thermostat tho.
OE thermostats are designed to fail open. When they do, your car will run colder and it will be harder to get the heater to blow hot air which appears to be what happened in your case.
