Temp Gauge problem

Temp Gauge problem
My sister's '01 Accord LX V6 is having problems with the temp gauge. My sister was driving her car for maybe 5 minutes or so and the temp gauge went all the way up to H. Then after a while my dad drove it and the gauge was on normal operating temp. He did not see the gauge go up to H at all. When I got home, I went to start the car up and in about 1 or 2 minutes idling the temp gauge went up to H. It gauge was on C and went straight up to H. Anyone have any idea as to what's causing this?

Re: Temp Gauge problem
make sure that the car isnt actually over heating..check the operation on the cooling fans. if the fans do come on, then she might have a bad ect sensor. (engine coolant temp sensor) located on the t-stat housing by the egr valve on the v6..
it might also be a good idea to replace the thermostat if that hasnt been replaced

Re: Temp Gauge problem
I turned the car on for a couple of minutes and the fan doesn't come on. If I turn A/C on then the fans come on. Does that mean the fans are operational? How would I check it? I'm guessing if it's not the fans then it's the ECT sensor.

Re: Temp Gauge problem
you guys are referring to the ECT sensor incorrectly. the ECT sensor is a 2-wire sensor that gives feedback to the ECU, it does not control the gauge on the dash. the dash is controlled by a 1-wire sensor right next to the ECT sensor. lastly the fan is controlled by at 2-wire sensor on the thermostat housing.
#15 - ECT sensor to ECU
#13 - dash gauge
#14 - fan control
i suggest you check the wiring running to #13, sometimes the connection becomes brittle and cracks/breaks off.
if that is not the problem then i suspect air in the cooling system. try bleeding radiator to make sure this isnt the problem or check for leaks in the system.
lastly, when the car is warmed up, grab the upper and lower rad hose and make sure they are equally hot, if not that is a good sign of a stuck thermostat, repalce it and bleed the radiator.
i have tried suggesting things in order of easiest/cheapest first so that you dont spend money for uneccesary parts
