I WOULD SAY ...TAKE YOUR BELT OFF AND REMOVE YOUR #1 SPARK PLUG. THEN STICK A PEN OR PENCIL IN THE PLUG HOLE $ AND SPIN YOUR
CRANK PULLEY ,UNTIL THE PISTON IS ALL THE WAY UP AND GETTING READY TO GO BACK DOWN.. YOU'LL FEEL IT.....GOOD LUCK.

uhh, pencil won't be long enough. Need something longer or you'll lose that pencil.

How is he going to know if it's on the compression or exhaust stroke?

Best yet...original poster...take $15 and get a haynes manual or go another 50 and get a Helms

thats how I do it but with a flathead screwdriver

This is a little more time consuming, but it's a nice visual method.....instead of trying to feel with a screwdriver. Take off your valve cover, and the top half of the timing belt cover, so that you can see your cam gear. Then, Stick a ratchet with a socket and extension through the hole in the splash guard, onto your crank pulley bolt. Turn the crank pulley anti-clockwise, until the word "UP" is straight up and the two little lines on the edge of the cam gear line up with the top of the head.

remove distr cap. spin engine till rotor point s to # 1 plug wire on cap , very easy to chk , the valve cover removal method is good but too much work ,no need to remove valve cover, as for putting a screwdriver in the cylider and feel if it is on top ,remember when u are on top dead # 4 ,,, the # 1 piston is also up so u cannot tell for sure if u are top dead # 1 or top dead # 4 . u could be 180 degree off

well.. the simplest way is to remove your cam gear cover and look at the word etched in the gear saying 'UP'... when it's pointing straight up, it's at tdc for the #1 piston.. then you rotate it 1/4 for tdc #2, and so on..

And which belt should he take off? Let us take the timing belt off and start turning the crank. This will be interesting.
