Default Removing fuel rail to clean EGR ports

I tried to remove the fuel rail on my mom's 1996 Honda Accord EX 4Cy Vtec manual trans. I could not seem to unplug the fuel injectors from the rail. Is there a trick to it? Also, there are a few fuel lines running in and out of the fuel rail, do I need to take those off to move it out of the way to clean the EGR ports, or can I just slightly bend them? If I take them off, that will depresurize the fuel system, do I need to do anything special to get it running again? Thanks!

The connectors on the injectors have a little wire that wraps around them at the base of the connector. Use a pick to pull it out from the side of the plug.
You should remove the gas cap, to vent tank pressure then break loose the fuel rail connection, have some rags handy to catch fuel spillage. The fuel pressure bleeds off after 1/2 hr.
What leads you to believe the EGR ports need cleaned out? Engine stumble? Check engine code? I hate to see anybody have to go thru this hassle if not necessary

Thanks for the tips!

The check engine light is on, and AutoZone says it's the EGR.

those vehicles were bad about egr ports clogging. if you've never cleaned it, your in for a surprise...carb buildup like a murf! causes rough idles, misfires, and poor fuel economy. good luck!

still, cleaning them wont hurt. more than likely they are stopped up. not to mention it's cheaper than buying a new egr valve. let me know once you clean the ports out.

Is there a procedure detailed in a Haynes manual for this? Just wondered. Thanx.

How do you know the ports are clogged up then?

I don't know that they are clogged. I am going by what seems to be popular opinion here that the EGR ports can become filled with carbon deposits and cause the ECU to throw a EGR code. Like others said, it's cheaper than replacing the EGR valve. If cleaning the EGR ports does not fix the problem, then I will move on to the EGR valve itself.

It's easy to check if they are clogged or not without taking it all apart. Just apply vacuum to the EGR valve while at idle and see if the engine dies or not.

if you check the ports, most likely it is filled if you never cleaned it before... but thats not the only place thats filled, you should remove the egr valve and look around there, youll be surprised how much carbon is in and around the housing also... dont forget to change the gasket after its removed, cost like 2$ -3$'s to replace... if worst comes to worst, do the egr block thing. save yourself the trouble and you wont have to deal with it again...

somewhat on this subject, I was checking Chilton's last night regarding fuel injectors and making sure they are working and not clogged. Well, I'm confident that they are all clicking, and I haven't had any check engine lights come on, or noticed any poor performance.

However, they guy who had this Accord before me really didn't take care of it mechanically. I'm going to check the fuel injectors, and if they have a lot of carbon on it, what do you use to clean them off with? Chilton's really didn't say, so I don't know if you use a certain type chemical, a towel, toilet paper, what?

Thank God that Hondas, for the most part, run and take care of themselves even when the owner doesn't...I'd like to slam dunk the guy who had it before me....

you can either check online and buy bg44k or seafoam, most guys love this stuff and says to be pretty damn strong cleaners, so use it wisely... cause some had problems with it, some say its like gods ****. you decide :\

it also says to replace the washers too when removing them from the engine. How much do they run? .99 a piece?

Edit: Off Topic for a moment, but I forgot how long someone is a trial user. I've been here for almost a month now...

its about like a buck something at any local auto store... make sure you put them in straight and not forcing it, youll end up ripping the o rings and fuel will be leaking everywhere...

and you dont need to remove the fuel injectors out of the fuel rail to clean your egr... if you unbolt a few of the screws and unplug the egr valves vac. hose, it easily slides out of the way..
