High NOx readings are sometimes attributed to a bad EGR valve, or component (blocked vacuum, hose, etc) relating to the EGR system.

How is the fuel pump? A lean air/fuel mixture can be caused by low pump pressure, causing high block temps. That can cause excessive NOx emissions as well.

Or as you suggest, clogged cat can be the problem as well.

I don't know **** about carburated but definitely check your EGR/vacuum lines. Clogged cat would smell like sulfur (wrotten eggs) and one would assume they would have said something.

Might try this to clean stuff up...

Have you checked your ignitioon timing? Retarding it a couple degrees from stock will probably get you a pass.
