Shift Lock Stuck in Park
Last night, after starting my '02 Accord, the shift lock mechanism would not release the shift out of Park. I was able to bypass/disengage the release lock manually, and the Auto Transmission seems to be operating normally. This morning, after starting the car, I was able to shift the lever out of Park a couple of times. However, during the the third attempt, it got stuck in Park once again. One rear brake light bulb burnt out a couple of weeks ago. And the red "Brake Light" warning indicator stays on when the ignition is turned on. Can someone please help me troubleshoot this issue?
Thnx.

Re: Shift Lock Stuck in Park (b4play)
if you take off the shroud around the shift lever there is a place to stick the key and it releases the lever.
also, there is a switch on the behind the brake pedal that unlocks the shift column as well, i had to replace my wifes, it was about 30$ and took me about 5 minutes to install it.

do your brake lights work?
if you replace the brake light switch make sure and install it correctly i have seen people install them too tight and it applys the brakes while they drive

Re: Shift Lock Stuck in Park (p10hlm)
Hello All,
Now and then, the shift would release from Park. However, when the shift was stuck in Park, I noticed that then the brake lights would not work. Thus, I determined that it was indeed the Brake Light switch (as a bunch of you suggested). I went to Auto Zone, picked up a replacement switch for $52.99 plus tax (it cost more than the regular one since it's also connected to the Cruise Control), and replaced it in minutes. The car is working fine now.
Thnx!

The shift interlock system keeps you from moving the car out of park unless your foot is on the brake pedal. It's safety thing.
