oil leak

oil leak
On a 2002 honda accord, I have an Oil leak along the bottom edge of the distributor cap (where the plastic cap meets the housing). I already replaced the O-ring. When I replaced the o-ring, that gasket around the distributor cap looked a little worn, mishapened. Could the oil leak be because of that?

Re: oil leak
No, because the oil would have to get past the internal seal to get to that gasket. You likely need to replace the internal seal. There is a thread in the faq's regarding this.

Re: oil leak
The additional problem with that oil leak is that just below and behind the distributor is a coolant hose that goes into the engine right there, and the fans blow the oil droplets down onto it, it swells and eventually bursts and leaves you stranded. Happened to my daughter. If the hose is glossy with oil, I would replace it as soon as it is convenient. You have to take the distributor off to replace it so while you've got it off, it is a great time to replace it IMHO.

Re: oil leak
The distributor oil leak softening the heater hose is what started the chain of events that led to the demise of my Accords original engine. That irritating little O ring can cause lots of headache.
