No brake lights, and car is stuck in park???????
I have a 97 accord SE auto.. and i got in the car today and it would not come out of park, and my brake lights do not work. I checked all the fuses, both under hood and by the drivers feet, and all fuses including the brake light fuse is okay. I am able to move my car by using the shift lock, but how can i fix this.... the car has 120k.

Bad brake switch maybe? Does the horn work?

I'm about 100% convinced it's the brake pedal switch or the switch's wiring There's is a Brake/Park Safety interlock that will not let your shifter move from Park unless your foot is on the brake. The switch that feeds into this interlock circuit is the same switch that makes your brake lights come on when you depress the pedal.
You can check the switch by getting under the dash and unplugging the 2-wire connector from the switch. Short the connector with a paperclip. The brake lights should come on. It's the same concept as your fridge/freezer light. Door opens-> light turns on. Only in this case, it's: pedal goes down -> lights come on. If there's still no lights by shorting the circuit, it's not the switch. Trace the wiring and do some electrical trouble-shooting. Let us know if the problem gets resolved. bagGed93, I think he can get it out of park if he uses the key to release the shift lock. So it has to be electrical. I'd be less worried about the shift lock problem(you can still drive it this way), and more concerned with not having brake lights(will earn you a ticket). Also, if the center brake light burns out, it WON'T take the other brake lights with it, unless the car's wiring has been monkey'd with somehow... |

Re: No brake lights, and car is stuck in park??????? (nuc79)
Thats weird, the same shit just happend on my 90 like a month ago.
I looked at the fuses in the engine bay, the tail lights are connected to the horn i believe? I put a fuse in there ( there wasnt even one in there???) and that got them working. Then for the car being stuck in park ( shift selector switch.... 30 dollars on hondaautomotiveparts.com) I just left the car in neutral and put on the parking brake. The thing fixed itself though.... it just started working again one day. |

Look down at the brake pedal. When you press the brakes it hits a switch and also there is a plastic piece that the switch engages. Check if it's broke. If so, you can get it at oreily auto.

A late night/morning for "holmes"
It is actually the other way......when you press the brake pedal the switch "releases". When not pressing the brake pedal, it presses "in" the switch. "Mike" - assuming you have the same gen Accord as the OP (94-97). If the horn is not working, the under hood fuse is probably blown - #30, 20 amp. |
Re: No brake lights, and car is stuck in park???????
Same exact thing happen to me!!! All I did was put a fuse in where it says stop/Horn funny thing is there was never a fuse there before, but hey it worked !!!! |
Re: No brake lights, and car is stuck in park???????
I have a 2000 civic LX fuses are good, just changed the brake switch and still the same problem, brake lights out, no horn & stuck on Park!

Re: No brake lights, and car is stuck in park???????
So you have checked every single fuse under the dash and every single fuse under the hood?
Is there a "horn" or "stop" fuse? When pushing on the bake pedal, do you hear a "click" (which I would presume is the brake switch?). |

Re: No brake lights, and car is stuck in park???????
At this point, I think you are going to have to break out the multimeter. Test out to each brake light, horn, and the brake switch to find the dead line, broken wire, or short created by something to verify where the voltage is getting to. because at this point, it has to be something else like the fuse box itself has a loose wire, under the seat something has gotten shorted, a loom has two wires that have rubbed off their insulation. Because if the fuses are not blown then the wiring has to have been cut somewhere, at least that's all that I can think of left.
