MOOG Asia-Spec Ball Joints
Yesterday turned into **** thanks to ******* Moog and using the same part number for different balljoints.
What you will often see advertised as 'K9463' is this...
Lower Balljoint K9643 comes in two flavors.
This is what most places will have, it will come in the standard MOOG box.
Notice any issues?
Due to the rough casting of the 'cup' it will NOT fit the knuckle.
It needs to machined like every other LBJ that is offered in the industry.
Lower Balljoint K9643 ASIA-SPEC with a red label on the box is what is needed.
*no image available at the moment.*
I'll post up pics later.

Re: MOOG Asia-Spec Ball Joints
thanks for bringing this up as i was going to replace my balljoints getting a slight tapping sound from driver side when cold. i thought it was the lower control arm but the balljoint is the one that has the play in it

Re: MOOG Asia-Spec Ball Joints
Just got back from going to six ORLYs. This is silly.
I am looking at the ball joint that is not a colossal piece of crap and it and the box it comes in both state "Made In Japan". This unit also comes inside a clear plastic bag with a paper...
AXCK9643
51220-SM1-A01
MADE IN JAPAN
The other MOOG BJs, that are not properly fitting are "Hecho en Mexico".
Not if it is 'Asia-Spec' but that it is made in Japan vs "Hecho'd".
The boxes have slightly different writing on the label as well.
All use the same UPC -0-80066-40403-5
There is a number under the UPC that is different for each box type.
"MOOG- Hecho en Mexico" has 1513065-P
"MOOG- Hecho en Mexico, ASIA-SPEC" has 1513113-P
"MOOG- Made in Japan, ASIA-SPEC" has 1512361-P
I don't know if this supposed to be a SKU or date coding.
Googled "51220-SM1-A01" and found this http://www.hondapartsnow.com/genuine...0-SM1-A01.html

Re: MOOG Asia-Spec Ball Joints
Studied the MOOG BJs a bit more and noticed the damn BJs that came in the plain 'MOOG' boxes had a larger diameter base than the ASIAN-SPEC units.
Tried pressing in the A-S diameter units and they slid in with little effort.
What a pain in the hole.
*No I did not measure them, FWIW the plain box units had a rather rough texture to the cup vs the A-S red labeled units.
