Default black smoke coming out exhaust

well my bf was driving behind me the other day and he told me that there was black smoke coming out of my exhaust.

i assume this is a problem.

he thinks it may be from using oil thats too thin and it somehow slipped into the pistons and burned up in there. i think we used 5w-30 and i read somewhere that 5w-20 is recommended for 6th gens.

what else would cause this kinda thing to happen?

black smoke would indicate that your car is running too rich.

try cleaning or replacing your air filter.

if it still persists, there could be something wrong with your injectors. In that case, run an injector cleaner through.

If that doesn't fix it, then you may consider having it looked at by a mechanic

I would bet money that it is your o2 sensors because my brothers prelude did that until we whanged his o2 sensors and it fixed the problem.

reset the ECU, let the computer reset the new air/fuel curve.

does it do it all the time, or just when you are hammering on it? cause if it only really smokes when you are in High RPMs that pretty much normal.
