Intermittent engine problem on Accord '99 4 cyl. 65000 miles

It happened 2-3 times in the winter. A few minutes after cold start-up, the engine will shutter at low rpm and it will disappear as the engine warms up. No engine light those times.

Last week, the following day after having tanked on a rainy day, it did the same in the morning, but more seriously. The check engine flashed and the engine died at least once. I thought that it was water. It eventually passed, and the check engine (no more flashing after the first time) cleared before my appointment at the dealer. I cancelled it.

This morning, AGAIN, but less scary.

I was told to check the distributor cap and ignition wires. They all seems clean and OK, no crack.

It is weird that it happens only 2-3 minutes after cold start-up only and disappear when warm.

The dealer want to charge me 50$ for reading the code. Will a code show if the check engine light is cleared, after a few day?

I hate intermittent problems. https://honda-tech.com/forums/images/smilies/mad.gif

Pour some water over them while the engine is running. Does that make it run rough or stall?

Thanks for the link. Probably saved 50$!

It is #71 most of the cases, but sometimes #72. When it does this, it is always on a rainy day. Once it is really warmed up, it is OK.

So I check all wires, unplug and put them back. I saw nothing unusual.

If it does it again, I guess that I should replace the distributor cap, should I ? Anything else to consider? Is there any inner parts under the cap that should be replaced as well?.

Thanks.

It did it again this morning.

Anything special to be cautious when changing the rotor and cap distributor?

I also wonder. If it would be rotor and cap, wouldn't it be doing this all the time when there is humidity in the air? Once warmed up, the problem goes.

sounds like a hairline crack somewhere.......

nop, i had the same prob with my accord, i got a new cap and rotor and boom it work perfecttt. my rotor and cap was just so worn out they were like not even touching. whne it gets hot, metal expands, and allows the rotor and cap to touch. thats all, so just change them and u will be fine
