Ideas for cheap, easy horsepower :p

Alright, Christmas is coming up and Dad was looking for some stuff for my car.
He said underdrive pullies and a chip should be good. We were also looking at cams, headers etc.
So, Honda-Tech, you have any ideas?

Generic 'chips' don't do diddly, and on a stock car, they do even less. Usually they only do two things, max out the timing advance, and maybe add more fuel under WOT. But both are just generic and do more harm than good. A proper tune can only be done via a dyno, and even then it has to be done by someone who knows what they are doing. Don't fall for the '75+HP. 100lbft of torque, gain 10MPG' claims of these chip companies. It's complete crap.

'Underdrive' pulleys for the F22 are non existent. Usually they are made to replace the crank harmonic damper, with an aluminum pulley. This is bad on so many levels. The Dangers of Power Pulleys & Understanding the Harmonic Damper.

A free flowing exhaust would probably be the cheapest, followed by a turbo if you still have the F22.

But if your dad wants to really give you a present, have him look around for HPDE or 'Driver Education' events. These are track days usually hosted by car clubs during a weekend. These are not timed/race events nor are they open track days. It's a true hands on course driving, with an instructor.

x2 on what Mad Mike said.

my "philiosophy" on giving auto upgrades as gifts, anything engine related beyond intake/header/exhuast can be too specific. I could go on to explain my reasoning but i'll keep this short. suspension, wheels and tires, interior and cosmetic upgrades are better gift ideas in my opinion.

if you want power, make the motor breathe. Intake and exhaust are the starting point for everyone. Suspension and rims will make it handle tho not make it fast.

Power is nothing without control. I wholely agree on getting a track instructor, especially for younger drivers. Theres a reason I have never had an accident in 14 years.

^Everything these guys said. Intake and exhaust are always the starting points for power, but you should keep braking and suspension performance equivalent.

Well, what I've got done is just taken the cat out, the muffler and replaced it with a free flow one, not sure what to call it, a cold air intake that's outside and in front of the tire, and I hope on removing the flex pipe soon. Stock exhaust manifold too.

Intake and exhaust is usually a good starting point like everybody else said but try to stay away from an eBay exhaust. Only thing keeping the stock exhaust on mine is that the cheapest ones I can find are $500+
Intake, exhaust, brakes, suspension, rims, tires, window and light tint, headers, maybe even a turbo.

Well, I've already got some exhaust stuff done already...maybe some lowering springs and a header? I don't know yet.

What engine do you have? F22B2 or F22B1?

That would be the F22B2 SOHC Non VTEC then.

A cam form Bisi, a header, or maybe a full exhaust. If you want to do something for the visual aspects of the car lower springs or maybe coilovers. :)

A DC header would be a good idea. It will not cause any problems. Why post in this guy's thread though?

im a new member and it wont let me start a thread for 15 days. i do apologize for intruding. thanks for the help. will the dc header mount right to the existing exhaust?

I think we're just going to go with a header and maybe going to the local junkyard and looking for some interchangeable parts off of something.

what header you gonna go with? does a 4 to 1 header produce more power than a 4 to 2 to 1?

That's a good idea, make sure you get a quality header though. F23 Intake Manifolds are something you could try find at a junk yard, read about it. You will get some power. :)

Well usually yes, but in the higher RPMs. 4-2-1's focus on the mid RPMs to make power, but you will make more peak power with a 4-1. Depends on what you are looking for.

so which one would be better for even power through out all gears?

4-2-1

You'll have a tough time finding a "cheap" 4-1 header for an F22B1/2 anyway.
