2000 Honda Accord automatic stuck in first gear.
Hey guys,
My cousin's car is stuck in first gear and it doesn't matter what gear I moved the gear selector to, it still displays 1 on the instrument cluster.
I took a video.

Notice I left it in 4th gear but the display on the instrument cluster still says 1st. How do I fix this?
Thanks in advance.

I am simply starting the guessing, but it sound like the shifter linkage has come apart or is loose from the transmission.
There can be a few places this happens.
Look here for the the inside of the car:
But it could be broken or have fallen off at the transmission, you can watch this to see what I am referring to:
Even if you have to replace the whole shifter cable, it's not that expensive. It will take you a little bit to replace it, but it doesn't require anything fancy.

Thanks for helping. This might be it. I'll report back after I get people to help me push the car into the drive way.

Re: 2000 Honda Accord automatic stuck in first gear.
Edit: I shifted the cable to Park position and it displays P on the instrument cluster, I tried to start it and it just cranks no start.
I lifted the car up and found that someone stole the catalytic converter.
I'm guessing they yanked on the shifter cable to make room for the saw and broke it.
My question is, does it messed up the transmission or just replace the cable and it will be ok again?
Thanks 99stockcivic

Re: 2000 Honda Accord automatic stuck in first gear.
You are probably in good shape, just swap in a new cable. Because they yanked on it, you might have to manually adjust the gear in the transmission (this sounds hard, but it's just a little lever you will push all the way to park and then attach your cable and tighten it up.
I can't believe someone stole a cat off a 20 year old car. It's just not worth that much, but people are ********. I'm sorry to hear, cat thefts are on the rise everywhere.
The transmission should be fine.
Also if you need a cat, I would just get an universal from ebay and have it welded on if you can.
Or Rockauto for the cheapest (still going to be around $200 for that car).
I don't think you can straight pipe it because it will set an error on the car.
Good luck.

Re: 2000 Honda Accord automatic stuck in first gear.
Thanks for the help again 99stockcivic.
I'll do the cable first and see if it starts up then going to tackle the catalytic converter.
Thanks again.

While under there make sure the 02 sensor is still there and not torn off or missing while deciding what to do about the cat.

Re: 2000 Honda Accord automatic stuck in first gear.
I went to the wrecking yard and pulled a cable from the same year Accord. I put it in and it starts right up.
I'm going to do what you suggested, getting a universal cat. and an o2 sensor from ebay. I'll bring to a shop near me and have it weld.
Thanks again 99stockcivic.
