Default direct fit vs. universal

Direct fit cat: Has correct flanges for the specific car, and thus is a simple bolt-in replacement.

Universal cat: Has no flanges yet, so a shop must weld the cat into place. They'll either cut the flanges off the original cat and re-use those, or weld new ones into place.

i will never do a dealer cat. dealers are the biggest rip of on parts and labor. i bout a cat on ebay about 2-3 years ago. it was actually recommend by member here. magnaflow carsound. got it for 59 bucks, installed was about 100. all together several times cheaper than the dealer. oh and the cat works great. it past my inspection as soon as i made the swap.

My 2000 Odyssey has had the CEL on since I bought it 3yrs ago. I have replaced the CAT (Universal one), Both 02 Sensors and EGR...it STILL throws a P0420 code. I have been told by many people, most mechanics, that the Universal CAT's will "throw" the code due to one reason or another so what other choice do I have besides taking it to the dealer?

Anyway, back to the original poster, what is the year of your Accord and what size engine? For my '99 LX, I can pick up a Honda OEM cat for $406 from here:

http://www.manchestermotorsports.com/index.cfm

Add in $45 for bolts, $32 for new covers if needed, and $104 for a new rear oxygen sensor (I don't know if it's supposed to be replaced with the cat or not).

It was almost $700 for my Odyssey on this site....would this one work just as good? http://www.autopartswarehouse.com/sk...etrain#reviews

Make sure there are no exhaust leaks, as that will throw a P0420 code too. If a universal converter still throws the code, your choice may be very limited. An option is to buy from an online Honda dealer like Majestic Honda at discount:

and have a mechanic install it. Some mechanics don't allow you to bring your own parts; but, there are many that will especially if they know you.

I drive a 99 sedan with a b16 swap. A couple of months ago I got C.E.L for the catalytic converter, I was wondering if I keep driving the car with the C.E.L will I mess other things up? As far as i know the car drives fine except for the annoying C.E.L that just pops up and the lousy gas mileage? Is it also a MUST that I replace the catalytic converter? Please help!

If you are getting a CEL b/c of the CAT (I.E. secondary o2 sensor that ONLY measure the cat gasses) you can simply put a spark plug defouler ($3) on the o2 sensor, reset the CEL, and the problem should be solved! But not for inspection.

Just got to Midas or some other place like that and get it replaced. BUT BUT BUT, TAKE THE OLD CAT. YOU CAN GET FROM $50-$100. EMPLOYEES OF THESE PLACES GET TO KEEP THE OLD CATS AND SELL THEM. So make some $ back.
