fuel pump problem??
ok i have a 1995 lx honda accord..since day one the car has had a starting problem i pin pointed the problem to be with the fuel pump...when you try to start it everymorning it wont start right away..you gotta keep try to start it and after a good 10 minutes the fuel pump will prime and the car starts..then its good for the rest of the day..i changed the main relay even removed the alarm system thinking it could be that but still nothing..i know the fuel pmp is good because when i ran straight power to the connector for the fuel pump it turns on..im running out of ideas..anyone?
-cliffs-
accord fuel pump wont prime in the mornings takes a good 10 minutes of trying to start it up..good after that for the rest of the day...happens every morning..
changed main relay and removed alarm system

Putting power straight to the pump and it works properly, this may mean that you might have a voltage drop in the wiring for the pump, do a voltage drop test, you will need a good meter to read as low as 100mv, the voltage drop should be more than 100mv though, actually the pump ground is where I would check first. Delay that order, what is the voltage to the pump when you turn the key on, and again when the key goes to the start position.
To actually test the fuel pump 100% you would need an oscilloscope with an Amp Clamp, you would need some training to know what a Current Ramp for the pump should look like, what is the normal current draw for this pump and some Math training to figure out the pump speed in RPM, is this an option for you. Without this stuff, we are just making an educated guess, when was the last fuel filter change.

Get a set of hose pliers or be very careful with a set of vise grips, clamp off the return fuel hose to the fuel tank where it leaves the fuel rail, that is what feeds the injectors, after that. This procedure is called Dead Head Pressure, it forces all of the available fuel pressure into the injectors which may give you enough pressure to start properly, but dont drive around like this if you dont need to. If this works, then you are probably looking at a fuel pump and filter change. Ultimetly, an oscilloscope should be used to check the heart beat of the fuel pump just to be sure, yes it is an added expense and the technician needs to know what he is looking at in the first place to decipher the info.
