'99 Accord, 4 cylinder engine. I put in 4.5 quarts in and the dipstick has oil about 1 inch to 1.5 inches above the upper dot.

What is the correct amount to put in, and how can I drain a third or a half of a quart out? Is it a matter of loosening the oil pan bolt and letting it drizzle out for a while, then close it and checking the level?

Edit: OK, I found it, it's 4.3 to 4.6 quarts with a filter changer which I did.

I guess I'll let the engine run some more tonight and check the level again, but as of this morning on a flat surface, after running for five minutes or so, the level was 1.0 to 1.5 inches too much on the dipstick. It's possible that I added a little too much, but no more than a third of a quart (I had a 5 quart jug, I went by the 1/2 quart mark on the side of it).

When I did my first oil change, I put in exactly the amount they said it should fit. It turned out to be too much. So I had to lift the car back up and drain it out like I was doing an oil change.

So now I just add less to start. Lower the car, check and recheck, then fill. And recheck and fill (if necessary). Don't go by a number. Start with 3 qt. Check. And add.

I'm not saying 3qt is enough. I'm just saying that's where I would start incase you buy your oil in 1qt bottles.

well, yeah, actually. the difference is about half a quart i'd guess

unless you jack up the front real high you leave half an inch of oil in the bottom since the drain bolt is on the side of the pan

follow normal procedures (car just high enough to get under) except that after the oil has stopped dripping, pull off the oil filter if you havent already and jack up the front end literally as high as it will go
if you're on a slope use that too so you get more out

lots more oil will rush out as you jack it up and then slowly trickle for about half an hour



with that said, i have used an entire 5quarts before and it wasnt overfilled that much, maybe 1/4" above


thats how i've always done it and the fill is right on each time with some oil left over

for peoples' information, i just found out a while ago that too much oil can be harmful to your engine, because the oil gets aerated and doesn't lubricate as well. maybe this was obvious to others, idk, just thought i would post it anyway

yeah, if the oil level is too high, the crank will be partially submersed
when you get it revving it splashes the crap out of the oil and makes like oil soda

That's why I was a little worried.

Last night I needed to take my son to basketball practice about a mile away, so I just used the Honda. When I returned I checked the level and the oil was right in between the two dots on the dipstick.

I have no idea why it was reading so high when I first checked it, maybe because I left it on ramps overnight? (the garage is under our bedroom, my wife was sleeping)

Yeah, started it up and check it.

My F22B1 I had takes about 4.5 qts with oil filter. All F Series VTEC should take 4.5qts.

I always stop about 1 quart short of what the manual says it takes - then start using the dipstick as a guide. That always works for me.

huh? I have the same engine and I put in 4 quarts per helms manual. The manual states the oil level should be between the 2 holes, if the oil level is beneath the lower hole on the oil dipstick add oil.
