Default Engine makes "knocking" sound at certain rpm

'94 Accord EX, F22b1, auto trans

Engine makes a knocking sound at around 1750 - 2000 rpm.
Not noticeable until the engine has had time to warm up.
Most noticeable just before shift from 1st to 2nd and 2nd to 3rd or when revving to 1750-2000 rpm in neutral/park.

It's not the kind of "pinging" sound you hear from using low octane fuel.

Need some ideas before I take it to the local shop...

Thanks.

I have the exact same car (sedan) and this sounds like your valves. Get them adjusted. Also, how long since your last oil change?

Oil changed about a month ago.
Transmission fluid changed end of October. (Just before I purchased the car.)
No sure when the last valve adjustment was done; will have to check the service records.

A friend thought it might be a wrist pin.

BTW - where is New York TX? I'm originally from Houston, but lived in New York for 15 years...

NOOoooo. Definately not the valves. It's the bottom of the engine. Either it's the main bearing that's gone bad, or it's the rod bearings, but definately one of those two. There's only one sort of sound for this, and it's very characteristical, once you know this sound, you can always recognise it afterwards.

I've had this problem on an A20, and on my late F22B1, which I had to replace, and am starting to hear it again on my 140,000 mile replacement F22B1.

It always means you have to either replace the engine because it will fail within a few ks to about 30ks. Or you could also change the bearings if the knocking hasn't damaged the crankshaft.

Sorry to break it to you man.
