Default PISTON keeps smashing my spark plugs!????

This is the second time that this has happened to me.....Symtoms seem like a ECM in a distributor going out but the distributor is fine...checked wires: fine, checked plugs: fine...except for cylinder number 1!!!!! what the duece??? the plug is all smashed(prong) the prong is touching the plug and there is no gap???? what to do?? the plugs have 3000 miles on the..the motor is a "stock" minus tuning and bolt ons H22a with roughly 80.xxx miles on it??? any help would very much be appriciated since this is all starting to happen before my Boost project

were the sparkplug threads on the head helicoiled? maybe done incorrectly
has the motor "jumped" timing? something had to happen in order for sparkplug to come into contact with piston. previous valve to piston contact?

Either that or you have a stray peice of carbon roaming the cylinder that's too big to be blown out of the exhaust valve.

well I was very mad when I posted this so I was inacurate..the Piston in cylinder number 1 seem to be smacking my spark plug! It's the second time it's happened within a week.....always happens right after a burn out, the first time I thought okay I have shitty gas in here(89 octane) it was detonating a little pre 400 RPMs so I was like cool thats what did it...now I was driving last night and felt like smelling some tire smoke and after the burn out I immediatly noticed it happened again..........symtoms are back fireing, slow acceleration, idleing roughly, fuel out of the exhaust.....so I put 4 new NGK coppers in ther and it's running normal again! the problem is right now I am throwing a CEL #17(speed sensor) which is totaly unrelated I feel to my ignition problem, so I haven't got a chance to beat on it to see if it does it again, the plugs I had before wew NGK iridiums...the new ones are gapped at 44 the old were 48

In response the motor hasn't Jumped timing, but I am going to take the belt off monday to see if it's missing a tooth

the belt jumping a tooth on the timing gears wont make the piston hit the plug my *** nogs....maybe the valves, but not the piston. Timing doesnt affect the distance between the ****** plug and the piston...that is constrained by the rods length.... it could affect the VALVE timing to where THEY get hit though.

I doubt the belt has anything o do with what is going on Fatty...

i used to have the ground get broken off every few months in my first h22a, i finally decided to rebuild the engine....never did figure out why though. It only happened once I sprayed on teh engine, but I later removed the NX kit and it still happened.

could it be the rod bearings going? This happened to me in a grand prix, and a couple days later the engine blew. Hope everything works out though...

Well the 94-97 jdm h22 is a non interface motor so it doesnt mater anyway if it did skip. it wont it ur valves or anything. fyi

sounds like the rod bearing....this can cause the piston to hit the head and probably hitting your spark plug as well...take care of the problem before it sosts you big time

make sure the spark plugs are gapped to specs, if thats not it then see if the rod is not too long. thats all i can think of at the moment. good luck

all h22 engines as well as just about all honda engines since the 80s have been interference engines. the Honda manual for the h22 states its interference, and my exprience replacing exhaust valves every time a timing belt breaks both back that up.

well I have developed a new therory....sooooooooo I have a BIG hole in my air filter....pretty much somehow the whole middle pies of it has blown into my IntakeMani???? what the duece???? anyway I'm theorizing could that be the reason??? because cylinder 1 is the farthest from the filter therfore having the most velocity?? could a> the first been the filter piece causing the misfire and pinching and b> somethign else flying into my motor? I dunno just throwing this out there?

pull your intake tube off and the piece should be stuck on the throttle plate. I've seen this happen before but you probably sucked some trash in there

yeah deperate times lead to cheap gas...never gonna happen again..what REALLY happened was somehow something got sucked into my #1 cylinder...I don't know but I took off the intake manifold a throttle body and found little pieces of ****...gave it a good cleaning, changed my speed sensor, put my motor mount inserts in and its all guud! thanks for the help, critizism and feedback

Glad you could figure it out. And good luck for the future!
Has the plug smashing problem been resolved?

You may want to find a friend that has a borescope so they can send it down into the trouble cylinder and see if anything seems to be wrong in there. Just to be safe ya know

you better leave that cheap gas alone! ur suppose to put 93octane in there or the highest the gas station has. H22's are high compression, it needs the higher octane......you'll end up messing ur motor up.
