Using an impact wrench to tighten stuff is for lousy mechanicians. Idiots are using it even to plastic covers. The wheels are constantly overtighten.

In order to untighten the cranshaft I had to use 4 feet long arm and twist the 1/2" extension bar (20" long) about 90deg. Does it soud like like 180lbs? 550lbs impact wrench could not make it. Of course all plastic cover bolts that were accesible by an impact wrench were overtighten and the plastic broken.

Impact wrench is NOT for precise tightening. Unless you don't care if you ever have to undo it or work for a car shop.

umm... yeah, that sounds about right. maybe not quite the 90* part but you will twist the extension, especially one that long, a good amount.

I lol'd at this statement. This cat must be in a profession that requires no specifications of any kind.

You asked, "How in the world is anyone going to OVERtorque a 16mm fine thread bolt?" That is an easy question to answer. Tightening any bolt, no matter what the bolt size or thread pitch, past the applications required specifications would be considered over torqued.

Example in case some people didn't understand.

The procedure for tightening a 16mm crankshaft bolt specifies said bolt to be tq to 180 lbf-ft. Then the mechanic goes and torques it to 190 lbf-ft. Even though nothing may break. Technically the bolt has been torqued over the recommended spec of 180 lbf-ft for this application. Therefore has been over torqued.

Cheers

I am so sorry, but I use professional tools and my MAC torque wrench was just Calibrated by MAC.

I don't know where you get your info from, but I know that air guns are not used in the state of Oklahoma by dealerships, even with torque limiters.

The crank won't turn if you use the proper tool either...

I bet You know all about Honda Engineers too.....

I used to be on a Team in the '90's that ran the 24 hours of Daytona with out any failures, 3 years in a row. No AIR GUNS for any drivetrains.

So who are you?

Oh, excuse me, HONDAGOD!!!

Anyone that tightens a CS bolt by hand is asking for trouble.

Part number 90017-PY3-003 94-97 Accord F22 crank bolt $11.95 from Honda parts online. I have no doubts that you can pick one of these up at a dealership for less as whltng has posted.

Actually its $69.95 from summitracing.com

http://www.summitracing.com/parts/MO...|1.6L%2f1590cc

But manafacturers do happen to have the other smaller tool which runs around the $30-$40 mark.

The Moroso tool would be good for someone who doesn't have a breaker bar. Although it would probably end up being about the same price for someone to buy the small pulley tool and a good quality 1/2" breaker. Honestly, I would rather buy the small tool and a separate breaker bar for $60. At least then you could use the breaker bar for other things.

if the thread in the crankshaft is stripped, running a tap in there isn't going to help.
