Default Heater pipe O-ring installation

Hey guys, the heater pipe O-ring on the thermostat housing side blew out so I'm going to be replacing it tomorrow. What's the best way to install it to avoid potentially damaging it? Install it on the pipe and shove it into the t-stat housing, or install it in the housing and push the pipe in? '98 Accord LX, 2.3L/4AT.

It will become clear - or should - when you remove the pipe. BTW, are you going to replace both ends of just the water outlet?
