Checking the timing on a 97 EX, 4 cylinder VTEC?
I was reading through the timing check procedure in my Haynes manual, and I can get everything set up correctly, but how the hell do I know if the the timing is set correctly at 15 degrees (or whatever the degree measurement is) beyond TDC? How do I measure the degrees in general? And, is there a better step-by-step on doing this procedure?

It's probably like all other Hondas... There's 4 notches in the edge of your crank pulley, the one all by itself is TDC (use that one for camshaft timing). Then the other 3 are a big one with smaller ones on each side. The center one of the 3 is the correct spark timing (16 before TDC?). The little ones are the tolerance, maybe +/- 2 degrees.

bringing this back from the dead... simple question but i finally got my car back and tried using my timing gun... i only have 2 notches on the edge of the crank... 1 single red one ... and another one if i retard the dizzy all the way back...

I bet the red one is stock timing, & your pulley doesn't have the little ones on either side to show the allowable tolerance around the stock point. They'd be about 1/8" away from the stock mark.
