I got my car back from a garage today (94 accord wagon ex non vtec i-4)), I had the engine replaced with a used one. The old engine had 325 000 and blew its second water pump under 75000. I figured it would be just as wise to replace the motor for 1100$. Anyway, when I got on the highway I noticed quite quickly that the overdrive isnt engagiging (the torqu converter isnt locking up). Anybody have any clues as to what might cause this. The only thing I can really say is that the engine does run alot cooler then the old one (the heat coming out of the vents is not much above 20C/70F). Could itbe something to do with the thermostat, and the computer not thinking its warm enough?

the torque converter locks up when the cars warm. so in theroy, if your thermo is shot, then yes, it could be effecting it. the computer could be thinking that the engine isn't warm enough if your thermo is stuck open and just letting the coolant cirulate. I'd replace it anyways, its like a $12 part and takes like 30 mins to install. take off your intake piping and then its just a clamp and 2 10mm bolts. Follow the lower coolant hose to the thermo housing towards the back of the engine.

u replaced an engine because a water pump failed? Were you using HONDA parts or after market? was the water pump properly installed?

....note to self next time water pump fails, replace engine.....

yes I did replace the engine, yes the water pump failed twice...but with 325 000 m I felt that a younger engine woulgive mema peace of mind, it was all about timing yes I only used original honda parts...I dont know if it was installed properly, I dont gennerally do that but I feel confident my mechanic did...how could it be installed improperly? its only a bolt in part no? anyways the engine i got put in was only 1100 so I know it will see325000 right....so why wont the torque converter lockup?

honda engines routinely see 400K+ miles or about 640Kilometers.......

improper tension on belt
over torqued the nuts
not enough sealant around the pump
pully problems...

thats unusual, a lot of people would rather see how far that motor can go, im sure it still had plenty of life in it

Is the pressure lever cable from the trans to the throttle hooked up?
maybe it is too far out of adjustment?
Here is an easy adjustment procedure; get your stubby 12mm wrenches and loosen the cable adjustment 2 nuts on the trans bracket.
Loosen to the point of having slack in the cable so the trans pressure lever is all the way seated or down.
Then remove the slack from the cable; When it's adjusted properly, you can start to open the throttle and just <U>at the point the RPM increases</U>, the pressure lever should <U>barely start to rise</U>. I use a long screwdriver resting on the pressure lever to help 'feel' when the pressure lever moves.
Driving test for proper adjustment;
Drive along a level road at 25 mph, light throttle, then floor the gas, the trans should downshift to first gear.
Repeat the drive at <U>28</U> mph, when you floor the gas the trans should downshift to 2nd gear.
