changing front rotors for a 97 accord LX....
I was trying to change rotors for my friend's accord LX. Well I have never seen it setup like this before
On my integra, you remove the wheel, and you have the rotors held on by 2 screws and then you have the caliper on the rotors...soo you remove the caliper and the 2 screws, and the rotor comes right off....
On this accord...you remove the wheel, and you have the HUB!!, then behind that you have the rotor, and the caliper on the rotor. so this is what i did to remove the rotor....
1) remove the the spindle nut
2) remove the 4 bolts on the hub which go into the rotor
3) remove the 2 bolts that hold the caliper in place
It wouldn't come off. Maybe someone could shed some light on this and tell me how its done. I don't own this accord, its my friend's and i would like to do it for him so he could save some money. Since I've been into cars...i have never seen a setup where the hub is on the outside and the rotor is behind it. The rotor is always on the outside, at least on most cars.....
any help would be appreciated...thanks

I have a '94 accord EX and I can only do the rear rotors myself. The front ones are pressed onto the hub. Better let a shop do it for you. They are a real ball buster!!!

I knew it. Who the hell sets it up like that?? Unless they just want you to bring it in for service so they can make more money off you. I would do it, but I don't have a ball joint remover, when I did my clutch you gotta remove all that and I had to go rent a tool. There is no way I am going thru it again....thanks for the info

they are not pressed in the hub and will come off with a little elbow grease.
i do not know why they are created like this but they are. Several of us have done research and looked into converting to rotor over hub design and larger rotors and calipers. SOHCkordVTEC has done the conversion.

It's not too hard if you reuse the wheel bearings and a slide hammer ($49 at Trak Auto and you can return it for a full refund) makes things a lot easier:
1) Break loose the spindle nut and loosen the lug nuts.
2) Jack up the car and take the wheels off.
3) Undo the 4 bolts that hold the rotor to the hub.
4) Use a slide hammer to pull the hub/rotor out of the wheel bearing. Note that the inner race of the wheel bearing will come off and stay attached to the hub.
5) Replace the rotor and put everything back together. Get the hub as far into the wheel bearing as you can so you can seat as man threads of the spindle nut as you can. When you finally torque the spindle nut it'll push the hub all the way into the bearing.
Now if you want to replace the wheel bearings you need a special tool to get the inner race of the wheel bearing off of the hub. Also getting the wheel bearing out of the knuckle is a major PITA. My car's been on jackstands for 2 days 'cause of those damn wheel bearings.

i thought misa's converstion was just bigger rotors calipers not to change the hub over rotor style?
from the original post and the pics it looked like the hub was still over rotor

My entire front suspension is disassembled. The wheel wells are totally empty. This would be a perfect time for a brake conversion (Corey theorizes using Prelude knuckles as well). Too bad I have 6 brand new and unused stock Accord-sized Brembo blanks! Oh, plus no money

We tried everything to get it off. The car has 90k....and it was rusted like crazy....
maybe he would just be better off if he took it to honda...we'll see

90K? That's a baby.
Did you try a slide hammer? The hub should pop right off.
What Morgan (urbanlegend21) did was to undo the lower control arm from the knuckle so you can swing the knuckle out and get the axle out of the way enough to access the 4 bolts on the back of the knuckle that hold the wheel bearing. Undo those 4 bolts all the way, but leave them in the knuckle. Next bang like hell on those bolts to push the wheel bearing out the other end. This is also what we did for Misa's (SOHCkordVTEC) brakes, but it was all futile as we could not get the inner race of the wheel bearing off of the hub and had to reuse the wheel bearing. Anyways, after all that, I'm not sure how Morgan got the hub out of the wheel bearing after getting it off the knuckle. Hmmm, maybe the rotor slides right over the wheel bearing and you don't even need to remove the hub? I haven't tried that 'cause I still haven't managed to get those damn bearings off. I actually removed the entire knuckle and am taking them to a shop to have the bearings pressed out.

I removed the four bolts on the back. and we tried to hammer it out and no lock man. We basically ruined the rotor when we were hammering it.

you don't hit the rotor with the hammer! we didn't worry about the bearings. We just pulled the hub off and removed the rotor.

didn't the bearing come apart on yours, Morgan? That's a sealed unit, and technically should be replaced if it's been cracked open. If it didn't come apart, that's pretty wacky. Both Dave's and Misa's bearing races separated.

No, both the bearings and the hubs simply just slid out of the knuckle, with some hammer hits..

Wow Dave! I didn't know you got so much done last weekend (sig changes) or were currently on blocks. If there is anything I can do to help b/f this weekend, LMK.
