The 740 is usually the lockup on the torq conv. There is a measured amount of slip allowed and you have too much. This is controlled by a solenoid on the outside of the tranny. It could be that the solenoid went bad and everything else is good in the mission. Do you have any other problems like slipping or shifting?

stolen from google, but i have no idea what it means????

Do you feel the torque convertor locking? I Feel it on my 96 EX 4cyl at around 50mph on 4th gear. You should feel it. And the RPM kinda goes down.

Hondas manual says it shoudl feel like another upshift. but honestly, i neevr noticed it in my car, and i've tried. its either happening sometime while its in 1st or my ass isnt sensitive enough.

I mean the only time it feels like the RPM drops is when it drops into overdrive. Maybe it has something to with the hill i was climbing I thought I had enough speed to carry it through but my speed got to 50mph and around 2.3K rpms. Maybe its throwing the code because it didn't downshift?

Re: CEL P0740 (Charri)

The torque converter engages and disengages when you're coasting or decelerating so I doubt that it'd engage/disengage while going up a hill, unless if the torque converter was trying to disengage as you were going up the hill and induced too much slip and threw out a code. Only thing I can suggest is to clear the DTC's and see if they come back right away after a decent amount of time on the road with it cleared.

Overheated Honda Converters/740 Codes

Just found this little tid bit of interesting info on later 4-5spd ATs... probably should have started a separate thread...
http://www.transmissiondigest.com/te...s/TD201109.pdf

Apparently the PV does not permit flow of ATF through the cooler below 1200 rpm. In traffic the transmission is not cooling, the greatest heat is created in the TC from shearing the fluid, pretty much anytime the car is in gear and stopped.

The shop manager, Sean St. John of A Tex Transmissions, Inc. 7926 Congress Street Port Richey, FL.34668-6713 Toll Free: (866) 447-7852 http://www.atextransmissions.com/1521180.html found the issue.

There is also a service bulletin about this issue. The RHD get this every now and again and it will say to try a new ECU. If nogo, then replace tranny. I get this when i do a hard exceleration. With as many changes mine went through for the the EPA, i am sure it has a flakey wire.
