Default 98 Honda Accord DX Catalytic Converter Cost + Labor

I recently got the honda's catalytic converter change and I was charged a lot for the part and labor. Does anyone know how much the Honda's catalytic convertor cost and where can I find the right price?

Also, how much does a brake switch (part and labor) should cost?

He's just trying to gain some knowledge. Getting ripped off can be a good lesson learned.

For parts try http://www.slhondaparts.com

And didn't the 98 model year have that "secret warranty" that covers emissions equipment? You might want to look into that.

If you paid by credit card you maybe able to do some kinda chargeback stop payment. If indeed you were torn a new @sshole by the dealer.

Good luck.

Why would the cat be $350? I'm in the process of possibly buying one for my Volvo, it will be about $125. Surely the cat technology won't be that different between the two.

Maybe the $350 is OEM and the $125 is for an aftermarket cat.

Had a question... my Volvo is a turbo, is a '93 model, and has 150,000 miles. I'll be replacing the exhaust system in the next week or so with a "sports exhaust". Would you recommend changing the cat at the same time? When I hit it with my hand there's no ratteling inside, I don't have any tools to do a more definate test of whether it's working or not.

If a cat goes bad, it will restrict exhaust flow which would result in reduced performance, right? But if it is that bad, won't it be ratteling when you hit it?

dunno Sven.. this is a Honda forum, take it over to the rolling-fridge forums..

p.s. cat converters contain some nasty carcinogens.. Don't mess with 'em too much or you might get lumpy later on in life..

it depends where you got it replaced, at a local mechanic or at a honda service?
the cat itself should not cost more than 150 for an oem replacement, and maybe 50 bucks to have them weld it on

My dealership has quoted people about the same price, which is why I went with a Magnaflow high-flow cat when my OEM cat needed replacement.

Magnaflow high-flow - $125
Had a local shop weld it on - $40

No, not the rolling-fridge forum, the "brick" forum ( http://www.brickboard.com ).

Thanks. I have bought a used Honda sometime ago, can you please let me know if the "secret warrany" is applicable to the used car purchase. If yes, please let me know where to find it?

98 Honda Accord, 107k miles. The honda recommends a 3 way cat converter which i believe would be little expensive than the regular cat converter. But I still believe that i was ripped off. Is it possible to order the parts on my own and ask them to just install it?

Honda doesn't have any secret warranties. Cats are covered for 8 years or 80,000 miles.

Have you had any trouble with your after market catalytic converter? Honda uses a 3 stage catalytic converter and I understand that the Odyssey is very picky about having an OE catalytic converter.

My wife's '97 LX threw a code that is making me suspicious of the catalytic converter in her car. P0420 is the code. If the code were with one for an O2 sensor I'd be looking for a replacement O2 sensor, but being that this a single code that is catalytic converter specific I'm weighing my options.

The dealer OE catalytic converter is $610 + $20 in gaskets. I can buy an OE on line for $452 or I can do like you and buy after market for $105. I'd like to save the $350 if I can.

I haven't had any problems with the Magnaflow high-flow cat. Everyone that I've seen or read of that has used them has been happy with them.

I just got mine replaced today on my 98 accord EX 4dr V6. The dealership wanted $910, no lie. The cat was $734, I guess they are hard to come by or something. I live in GA and the warranty only goes to 80,000 (I called Honda themselves). in CA it's 100,000.

I went to a place I can trust and with labor they charged me $230. I spent another $290 on new O2 sensors because I am at 98,000 miles and I figured I might as well.

I heard prices from $200 to $500 to the ridiculous dealer price. Aftermarket cats and sensors work just as fine.

My new cat came with a 24 month/24,000 mile warranty the sensors 1 year/12,000

Hope this helps.
