95 accord trip and odometer not working
i was driving to work this morning and the trip and odometer just stopped working. the speedo works fine, just the trip and odometer. i tried resetting the trip back to 0, so now that's stuck on 000. the odometer was turning to 168500, so it's stuck in between 168499 and 168500. any sugguestions on how to fix this?

Re: 95 accord trip and odometer not working
About two months ago, I purchased a 95 Accord with the odometer stuck at 169k. I was expecting to have to either pull things apart or pay to have it fixed. I happened to come across this thread through a Google search and fixed it in about 5 seconds yesterday.
Thanks, P_Adams. Your info helped me as well.

Re: 95 accord trip and odometer not working
Ok so my 95 Honda has around 170K miles and the speedometer and trip are not working. I tried popping the reset button several times as P Adams suggested, but that did not work. I am currently entertaining the idea that it might be the VSS. However, I do not know how to check it to see if it is good. I am kinda at a loss here and don't know what else it might be. Any help would be great!

Im not sure how bad your VSS has to be to trigger the cel but this could be a sign that its on the fritz. In some previous threads people mentioned to test the VSS with a multimeter to see if it is receiving the correct power. I am on my second 94 accord (cd5) and had these signs and its resulted in being my VSS. The problem is, the VSS is pretty cheap, but a pain in the *** to replace.

If you are not getting a Check Engine light, then the problem is a fault in the circuit board on the back of the speedometer head itself. Fairly common in '94-97 Accords. Replace the speedometer head.

Re: 95 accord trip and odometer not working
If cruise control works, then it is not the VSS. I had the problem on my 93 wagon; t the speedo and odo circuits on the printed circuit board in the cluster were corroded. Couldn't find a wagon cluster (they are different), so I used a sedan cluster and had to put the 130 mph speedo from the sedan in place of the 140 mph speedo in the wagon to get it to read near correct.

Re: 95 accord trip and odometer not working
I have a '95 Accord with the same trip and odometer issue. I tried the snap back trick on the reset but that did not work. I did try another trick found in another post that worked for me. Play around with the maintenance reset button just to the left and below the odometer. I just used a pen tip and pushed/poked and voila! Odometer and trip meter both started counting again. I would also recommend as other have stated before, do not play around with any of your resets buttons on the instrument panel if you can avoid it. I did that a week or so ago and it may have contributed to the stoppage....just speculating. Thanks.

If the Check Engine light is on and the ECU is storing a code for the VSS, then the problem is the VSS or related wiring.

Re: 95 accord trip and odometer not working
P Adams thank you good sir! I guess google really is your friend haha. Had the same problem happen, at 84,899 miles the odometer and trip odometer on my 95 Accord froze. I specifically signed up to the forum to thank you! I will be visiting here much more often. Next project will require very many questions...

Re: 95 accord trip and odometer not working
i have a 98 acura cl 2.3 that does this. when u turn the key on it goes to 20 when its not working. it works occasionally and when it does it stays at 0 when u turn the key on. when its not working it goes to around the 20 mark and itll bounce a lil and whatnot when ur driving. also i was curious if i took a cluter out of an accord and took out the speedo head unit would it fit into my luster and be correct on speed. they seem to be the exqact same head. i know the cluster is slghtly different on how it mounts but looks the same..

Re: 95 accord trip and odometer not working
the speedo works occasionally. weve concluded its not the vss. we messed with it. the cruise works and we had a scanner on it and it was giving up the right info. i think its the speedo head. it worked the one night i went driving around for 34 miles then the next day nothing. so it picks and chooses. when we unplug the vss it still stays as 20 when its not working.

Re: 95 accord trip and odometer not working
Hmm interesting, did you actually replace the sensor or just check it? When I had my eg coupe had the same problem, I finally coughed up the cash for the sensor replaced it and it worked since. From what I know that sensor will wear quickly because it has a "gear" like mechanism on top.

Re: 95 accord trip and odometer not working
mine on my 94 wasnt working either. the niddle would go around all the way and it stopped reading miles lik a year ago. just went and bought one (with less miles than mine) and put it on myself. took some work but got it done.

Re: 95 accord trip and odometer not working
Thank you PAdams and Outtasite19. The snap back on trip reset did not do the trick. I pressed the maintenance reset button on the lower left of the speedometer and that did the trick. Repair shop wanted $380 to rebuild when there was no problem. Thank you, thank you!

Re: 95 accord trip and odometer not working
Holy s#!t it worked! I sure wish I had seen this much sooner. My odometer stopped working five and a half years ago. I hit that reset button countless times but snapping it back out was the difference. I was [this close] to drilling a hole in the dash window to spray WD40 in which I now know would not have helped at all. This saved a HUGE amount of hassle from dismantling the whole console and dash! AWESOME! Thank You!
