I have a 1995 Accord EX, auto trans with 250K miles.

I was driving the other day and after engine warmed up it started running sluggish and when accelerator is pressed down it feels like it is flooding and running on three cylinders. At stop lights it shakes and feels like it is going to shut off, but it doesn't. When trying to accelerate it has almost no power and I had to tap and let off the gas pedal to drive it. I also hear a popping noise when it has the miss. It is quite abrupt and distinctive when it happens.

I came back home and looked over all the basic and obvious checks, everything looked normal. This has been one of the best cars I have ever owned, in the last 11 years I have only had to do very basic tuneup and oil changes and all the normal replacement items, brakes, tires, muffler. I did a spark plug, cap and rotor change and EGR cleaning, checked coil ohm values and they are ok, battery is good and alternator is putting out 14.3 V. The oil and antifreeze look good and no mixing, the spark plugs show the normal slight brown color as if they are burning normal. I was thinking that those tune up parts were worn because it has been so long since I last changed them. None of that fixed the problem. I also performed a compression test and it read #1 170 and bled down to 150 in 1 minute. #2 155 and bled down to 135. #3 160 bled down to 140 in 1 minute. #4 175 and bled down to 165 in 1 minute. I did a dry test and engine was slightly warmed up but not hot. It doesn't have a CEL on and there are no codes stored in the ECM. car starts up normally and revs up decently but when it starts to warm up is when the missing starts at idle and under load.



Any help would be very appreciative.

A few days old and you've prob moved on.

Have you thought about a lazy O2? They can get lazy/slow without setting a code.

Lost Again: I checked the O2 sensor and it was within specs.

Suma: It will drive fine at cold start up but after it warms up it runs rough when accelerating. The engine will not pick up speed while pushing down on the pedal, it shutters and feels like it is missing and running on three cylinders. If I push real gentle on the accelerator it will pick up speed slowly with out missing. At idle it makes a popping kind of slight back fire noise.

I have a buddy who is a tech at a Honda dealer and he thinks it may be a head gasket going bad. He said I should pressure test the radiator and also suggested checking for a blocked Catalytic converter. I am going to try and get a hold of a Gas system analyzer kit, Napa BK-700-1006. That looks to be a good way to pinpoint if the head gasket is bad. The thing is I don't have many of the typical symptoms normally associated with a bad head gasket.
