Default 2001 Accord Tranny ? - could not find info through search

I have read threads on the tranny issues with the 2000-2001 Accords but never found a reason as to why the transmission is failing. My 2001 Accord with 40,000 miles is shifting hard between 1 and 2, has done this since about 20,000 miles.

Dealer said the fluid was very dark and to change it. So I did, and it was completely black in color, foul smelling and lots of metal gunk on the oil plugs magnet.

It still shifts funny/hard even after the change and the color of the fluid is now brown like motor oil after a 1000 miles of use. Not bright red color like new.

Why is the tranny failing? I know I can get a new one put in under warranty, but is it going to do the same thing 20-40 thousand miles down the road?

Is it a bad design, mis-used the wrong fluid type at the factory, Belts adjusted wrong? What will be different about the new tranny they put in.

Thanks.

I must have answered this in about a gazillion threads

6th gen V6 transmissions have the following problem areas (not in any particular order)

1. Differential bearings are crappy causing axle seals to leak
2. 2nd gear clutch pack gets nuked when the main filter gets clogged because 2nd gear clutch pack already has low lubrication and when the filter cloggs, it pretty much gets starved of fluid.

symptoms of impending doom are

1. delayed shifting when cold 1 second or longer to change gears
2. trans slipps in 1st or 2nd gear
3. Harsh reverse engagement
4. Jerks when coming to a stop when downshifting into 2nd

So has that issue been addressed if they repair/replace my tranny? Or will it crap out again after a few thousand miles?

Trying to decide if I should keep it after the repair or trade it in.

Thanks. Sorry you had answered it before. My search on here did not find much about what casued the problems just that fact that they had problems. I also checked the first 3 pages of threads at the time to see if the question had been asked before. I am not new to forums and also hate answering the same questions over and over on the Jeep forums I frequent. I do search before asking a noob question, just did not have any luck this time.

your best option would be, replace the Tranny - because you have warranty, then keep changing tranny oil, every 15/20K or so.

thats what I do, some times I change tranny oil, every 4 oil change, it's work like brand new. (change oil; i don't go to the dealer, I do it my self)

What about the filter getting clogged as YeuEmMaiMai stated? Still sounds like that would be an issue over time, unless you wanted to crack it open once or twice a year to replace it as well.

you can't crack open that trans for every oil change, you may install a by pass filter, between the trans and rad.

removing tranny is not fun, I pull my spark plugs, my back still hurting. lol

in this World; we can't prevent every thing from happening, no matter how we live, we gonna die one day

so same goes to the tranny.

HondaDude - That was sarcasm on my part about cracking open the tranny. I have opened trannies many times to replace the filter.....after the 70,000 or more miles as stated by the manufacturer of what ever vehilce it is.

I know the warranty goes to 100,000/7 years (with a possible short extension by Dec. 28th) but replacing a tranny 2-3 times with in the milage range of 100,000 miles is rediculous, both on our part and Honda's. So I guess everyone with the tranny issue is just saying okay put in a new one, but what happens after the warranty period/miles are up and it goes out again....?

Chrysler does the same crap with their 42RE tranny. I guess I expected better from Honda, as my last one went to 230,000 miles with no issues before I sold it. I know all manufacturers get a bad batch so to speak every now and then, but I expect a re-design fix on something like this, not just a replacement with the same issues.

before I had a '98 accord v6 and it ate 3 transmissions within 11K- all under warranty. The first rebuild was at 89K, the second was at 94K, and the third one was at 100K. As soon as I got it back from the trans shop, I drive straight to the dealer and traded it on a 2002 CL type S that I drive now.

The funny thing about that trade is that CLs are known for eating transmissions like it is their job too. Good thing Acura generally takes good care of owners in regards to that issue.
