Default 1995 Accord LX fuel mileage

I have 1995 F22b2 obd1, no cat, and 229k miles. I bought it in pretty rough condition for the purpose of towing behind my motorhome (needed a manual trans, 4 dr, under 3k lbs). After my daily driver SUV died I started driving the accord everywhere. I have a certified CAT scale ticket showing the car weighing 2990 lbs with the tow bar, chains, tools, compact spare, and a full size spare in the trunk.

I was pretty happy with the 28 mpg I was getting compared to 13 in my old Durango. As I repaired things I noticed the mileage started to climb. I replaced a bad wheel bearing, both cv axles, timing kit, changed trans oil (I’m confident it was original fluid), and experimented with different oil weights. After each repair I gained a little more mileage.

I’ve now started using the car for delivery service and it now has 259k miles and a permanent towing receiver mounted in front of the bumper. I’m getting 31 mpg! 31!!How is it possible to get 31 mpg out of a car rated for 25/31 that has extra weight, non-aero dynamic crap on the front, and nearly 300,000 miles on the original engine???

How many miles are you getting on a single tank of gas? The specs show it has a 17 gallon tank. Is this really true because I have never filled up more than 15 gallons and I was probably on fumes at that point. My 94 accord has gotten up to 500 miles on a tank of gas but I thought the fuel tank was like 15/15.5 gallons. I regularly get about 420-450. My last tank was 472 miles and I have 338K miles.

I've heard of vehicles sometimes exceeding the EPA mileage ratings, especially with manual transmissions if the it's 10+ years old or so. Today the automatics typically return better MPGs than a manual (in the few vehicles that still even offer them) of the same model. My 1999 Accord EX 5MT MPGs are rated slightly higher than the 4 speed auto. I'm not getting the great MPGs you are though! You must drive the manual efficiently.

Good to hear it's doing so well with those miles on it. And Paul's Accord - also impressive MPGs and miles on the odometer. 472+ miles from one tank is great.

YES! Love this thread, the title sucked me right in...My 91 Accord MT, by the way, has 209k miles and I just completely filled the tank today (I usually use Shell non-ethanol tainted fuel...yes it's pricey) and so I remember that I put in 11.8 gallons and had driven 418 miles according to the trip odometer. That's like 35 mpg and I drive about 25% city and 75% hilly highway most days to work...I used it as a beater car. Having said that, this car has no AC, I ripped it out long time ago (>12 years) and I also ripped out the cruise control (bad decision) as I thought the thing was way broken but months later I discovered that bottom by the dash behind the steering wheel that needs to be pressed for it to work...facepalm.
That ripping happened during timing belt replacement since the cruise control was in the way; ya, I regret it. Anyways, it's a great car indeed, so much so that here in Arkansas is hot as hell now and I still drive my beloved Accord still, no shirt on and windows down! This Accord is first car I owned way back when I graduated High School. I was the 3rd owner. Currently I also own a Subaru which has AC and cruise control, but I still love to drive my manual Honda any day! F*#&@ yeah, them F22 engines are the best! Not to mention the transaxle which has been doing great and uses regular engine oil! This car is outta this world, I can bet that I'll never own such reliable and low maintenance car ever!

Oh, by the way, it's possible Colonel! These vehicles are amongst the best of the best the world has to offer us mortal beings.
