Ok so I have a 1991 Honda Accord Lx and basically I can't take it out of park without putting the key in the shift unlock and putting the car in neutral and also when I had to start doing that NONE of my gauges work AT ALL and my windows don't roll down. I have done some research and from what I have found, it could possibly be the neutral safety switch? It's only $60 at a near by autozone but I want to make sure that could be the cause. Also I've been told to check the Neutral Safety Switch fuse..I don't know what fuse that would be. If anyone can help me out with this I would be so grateful!!!

Think about it.. If you aren't getting power to your windows, dash, other interior parts, don't you think it would be smart to grab a test light/multimeter and learn how to check and see if you're getting power where you should be to the neutral safety switch? Sounds like a fuse is blown for some reason, short or something.

You can waste money and throw parts at it, or you can find the problem and fix it.

Well I know nothing about cars by any means, so I really didn't think about that. As far as the fuses I checked them all and they all seem to be good. I can definitely go get a test multimeter, but where would I even start in start in seeing where the power is or isn't going lol. I want to learn how to fix this myself or at least have some basic knowledge before I just take the car to a shop.

If you were going to replace the safety switch, then that is where you'll start with your voltmeter. The Auto gear box might need cleaning as the the electronic contact there might be dirty. Go over to CB7tuner forum and find the DIY guide. There's one there, but the site seem to be down right now.

Haha. These guys and their multimeters. Easier said then done.

You can't diagnosis something if you don't know how it works. Easy as that. Once you know how the circuit works and what each components do, you can find the problem easily. First thing my electrical instructor told me. OP, if you have no clue, get someone else to do it then f*cking more things up. Especially with electrical. Good luck!

Check the brake switch first. They say your brake lights might not be working too.

(original post)The neutral safety switch should only control whether the car starts or not. It should only start in neutral or park. If the car starts when you move it to neutral then the problem lies elsewhere. Possibly in the ignition switch or if you're car is like my Toyota automatic there's a separate type of solenoid that actuates when you push the break which allows the shifter to move. I'm not a specialist on automatics but I would guesstimate ur problem is the ignition switch considering the issues is arising with problems with electrical items. You can take the contacts cover off and clean them to see if it fixes your issue. Make sure you absolutely take the negative off the battery before messing with the ignition switch since there is battery voltage going through it.

The brake switch is so cheap AND its easy to replace. Just check and see if your brake lights work first.

Yes its definitely the fuse which controls the AT handle. I believe that would be the fuse box under the driver side dash ( left hand side).
