1990 Accord Engine Swap

1990 Accord Engine Swap
My wife has a 1990 Accord that has been in the family since it was new. Her dad bought it for her mom in 1989. The car has been passed around and now we have it. The engine experienced a cam failure, probably due to engine neglect. We are looking for a good swap candidate. My nephew, the Honda/Acura expert, suggested the H22A1engine. It's a fairly easy swap and it will provide additional years of service for the kind of driving my wife does.
Any problems with doing this swap? Anything in particular I need to watch for? We will change the water pump and timing belt as a precaution. I have heard that we may need an ECU adapter harness.

H22A1 is a good engine ~195HP, but it is a higher revving engine compared to the F22. If you change to the H22 it will be best to accompany it with the H22s transmission.
If you don't want/need the higher revving engine there is the H23 @ 160HP. Still requires the same changes to swapping to the DOHC as with the H22 but maintains usable low end torque.
Plenty of swap info in the FAQ at the top of the forum.
Or you simply could find a replacement low mileage Japanese import engine to replace your F22A1/A4/A6 that is in your car.

Re: 1990 Accord Engine Swap
To put an H22a in, you will need to create a sub harness for vtec solenoid, vtec oil solenoid, knock sensor, and iabs. You will then need to run a p13 Ecu or a chipped p28/ p06. Also if it’s an automatic. Suggest running an H22a transmission to handle the higher revs. If you google search “h22 swap cb7tuner”. There is a whole thread dedicated to this.

H22a, F20b, H23
Make sure you get the right tranny. It won't be cheap either. The H22a will be the most expensive depending on what you do whereas the F20B and H23 being the cheaper options nowadays.
Manual trans types of the three mentioned above are 200 HP and probably worth it over any auto transmission.
If you do water pump make sure it's a prelude version (if you go F20B). Same with the Timing belt. I went with Kaizenspeed H22 belt on my F20B swap (H22 and F20B have similar components save for some internals). Consider replacing main bearings too.
Another option is to do the oil pump with balance shaft delete.
I'd go with a chipped P28 as that is easier to find http://www.hamotorsports.com/sockete...p-package.html
If you have an auto and plan on going manual you will need a half shaft I believe (I did) and a new driver side axle. Also might need to see if clutch/flywheel is shot.
I am currently doing this F20B build on my 94 accord Ex.

Re: 1990 Accord Engine Swap
OP, The easiest two swaps would be sourcing another F22 or F23 engine. Both are available with low miles from importers. The latter will give you a small bump in power and torque. Both engines will require a few small modifications to be made since they differ slightly from the F22A that the 90-93 Accords originally came with. If you could source an F22A engine from a junkyard, that would be basically plug and play with what you have.
H22A/H23A/F20B will all basically be the same difficulty to swap. Externally the engines are nearly identical. They do require more modifications than the other F series SOHC engines I listed above. These are all performance oriented engines so you will get a decent bump in power but it's a more involved process to get them running properly. If you just want to get the car running with a fresh, healthy engine then consider just going with another F22/F23.
