02 Accord F23A4 performance issues
I recently picked up an 02 5-speed Accord with the ULEV F23 engine in it. It has 200k on it and runs good, generally, but it has some odd issues I cant seem to figure out. First of all, I believe it has low oil pressure. The engine does have the death rattle, although it has not developed a full blown knock yet. The rear seal leaks pretty bad. I am assuming the thrust bearing is worn out since it is a 5-speed car with high miles.
Anyway, under load and especially at lower rpms, the engine acts like it is either starving for fuel or the ignition timing is being drastically retarded. This symptom is not consistent either. It is intermittent and almost random. I have noticed though that if I let off the throttle just a tad whenever its doing this that it seems to clear up and you can feel it pick up a significant amount of power.
I am wondering if this issue is oil pressure / VTEC-related since the engine does have low oil pressure. It appears that the previous owner has replaced every single sensor on the engine in an effort to solve this problem. I did check the upstream O2 sensor and it does have the correct wideband denso sensor in it. It also is not throwing any codes and when I watch the real time data on the spark advance on my scanner while driving it appears to be normal. In other words I am not seeing it pull 20* of timing back like it feels like its doing. I just cant figure it out.
There is a nice F23A1 engine at my local JDM importer for $400. What am I going to get into if I decide to swap it?

Re: 02 Accord F23A4 performance issues
Something else I should mention I guess...this car leaks water inside the cab on the passenger side. Firewall/floorboard area. I’ve had several Hondas over the years that had this same problem. I just did a quick search to see where the ecu on this car is located....its right in the f’ing wet spot.

did you use a gauge to measure the oil pressure?
if you have a significant seal leak and low pressure you might as well pull the engine/trans and replace with the JDM, I did it a few months ago. Just inspect the JDM really well before buying.... compression, inspect plugs, pull cam cover, look in the intake plenum for excessive crude, look for oil in the water jacket, water in the oil pan, broken parts, evidence its been stored for a long time... for one guy it takes a week or so to do it right.

Re: 02 Accord F23A4 performance issues
Didn’t use a gauge. Been building engines for 35 years, I know it has low oil pressure. Its just matter of time before it drops low enough to turn the light on. I am going to replace or overhaul it, however I would like to figure out what’s causing the performance issue first. Hate to go to all the trouble to change it only to realize the same problem is there - even with restored oil pressure.

I believe both are transmission shaft speed sensors used in the control of the shift logic.

Jose and noemi@ It is a transmission shaft speed sensor.
And if you diagnosis with a quality scanner like Autel Maxidas DS808 https://obd2scanners.org/autel/maxid...agnostic-tool/ then you will get more clear and accurate data.
