I'll gladly take a sick day if I'm not feeling up to it. I'll go to the doctor on my sick day to make sure I don't have anything serious.

But.... When I was working in the restaurant biz as bartender/waiter, I would have to be forced to come in if I couldn't find coverage or risk losing shifts. It blew. I would pop airborne and vitamin C pills like skittles, and drink oJ all day.

It's infuriating when people come to work sick, and I stay home as much as I can, though I don't get sick too often. There are a few variables to the situation though. American work culture and health insurance issues are just totally fucked. People in America for some reason believe they need to work themselves to death, and employers often don't even give sick days, and many people literally cannot afford to miss a day of pay. We'd be much happier and healthier as a society if people had some sick days and actually used them. But on top of them, people are often spreading sickness when they still feel ok, but don't realize they're putting the germs out there, so sometimes it can be hard to know.

Also, if you're an employer that doesn't offer any benefits, you cannot reasonably ask your employees for doctor notes whenever they are sick.

Evil oil industry on the other hand pays little Jimmy, who was raised by crack head parents in the ghetto, 100+ k a year plus a huge stack of benefits.

Hipsters, who say they are the champions of said people, then proceed to call those people uncivilized cave men. Better yet they also can't provide little Jimmy any "civilized" career paths that can match the pay and benefits.

Funny how that works.

But those oil field guys didn't even go to college. They don't deserve that kind of money!

Food workers should cough in more food. In fact maybe we should combine elementary schools and Taco Bells. A few years of that and all remaining humans will have super immunity for sure.

An employee at a Panera in Montgomery tested positive for Heptitis A yesterday and may have infected others at the restaurant. Crazy since we were just talking about it.

Almost ALL of the technological leap and the billions lifted out of poverty from the past 100 years are due to oil, including the technology required to get us off oil.

Better yet is that we tried to go to the best source of energy available, nuclear, but the so called environmentalist movement is one of the main things that stopped us and as a result have led to massive future consequences for the environment due to pure ignorance of cold hard data...the same thing you see with climate change deniers today.

People: "Get off oil, hydrocarbons are the devil!"

Scientist man: "Ok well thankfully we have a much safer and cleaner form of energy in nuclear, it will basically change society if we can go full tilt with it."

People: "No, nuclear is more evil because bombs and Chernobyl and stuff"

Scientist man: "But literally every piece of data shows that what we are doing right now is way worse in every way, even if we had a Chernobyl incident every few years nuclear would be safer."

People: "No. Everything should be solar, hydro or wind farms."

Scientist man: "Ok this is like the 1980's bro and solar and wind farms are basically terrible and hydro destroys the hell out of environments."

People: "No. Renewable now."

Scientists: "But if we go to so called renewable now they are so inefficient that we'll actually destroy more of the environment, we'll basically spend nearly as much energy getting them to work as they'll produce in return. For real bro, just let us continue to build more nuclear plants and improve the design."

People: "Hiroshima".

Scientists: "Ok so you won't let us do the only viable option and the other options literally suck so bad they can't provide even a tiny fraction of the amount of power needed. Are you cool with regressing society about 50 years and having hundreds of millions if not a billion + people die off within just a few years from lack of efficient energy sources?"

Moopmoops in 2019: "LOL at poor people with no education who can get well paying jobs."

So would you rather the oil companies pay minimum wage? I mean I know in your fantasy world they wouldn't exist, but they do. Is it infuriating that the industry that is seen as the poster child for "evil capitalism" is possibly the best industry in the world for providing upward mobility for poor people? Why aren't the socialists stepping in to help these guys? If you guys would actually pay a decent wage or provide true worker owned means of production of your companies I'm sure you could lure plenty of people away from the evil oil industry right?

Nope.

I have months of sick pay. Iím not supposed to come in if I have the slightest sniffle.

Night and day from my last job where you pretty much were forced to come in unless hospitalized and the entire place would be a sick ward. So gross.

People in the United States don't feel the need to work themselves to death as a whole, there are many levels of employment and achievement. I'm relatively positive you don't work very hard, but are satisfied with the fruits of your labor, or at least say you are. Others want more, so they work more. The higher your compensation in most cases, the more important you are, and the more impact you will have on the bottom line if you are absent. The funny part is, often, the people who refuse to miss work, CAN afford to miss a day of pay because of their success. I may feel different about this if (as you pointed out) you weren't MOST contagious BEFORE you have symptoms, but since that isn't the case, people who choose to stay home just prefer to rest and recover in comfort, rather than doing their job, and hide behind the notion of keeping everyone else healthy in order to make themselves feel better.

Again, I also feel different in cases where you are handling food, dealing direct contact with customers, or coworkers.

I dont care how important you are. It's the 21st century guys. We have the technology to work from home now

Most jobs have this capability. I work in the finance industry so it's easy for me to say this as we have the tech. My VP works from home often, whether she is sick or not.

We also have a lot of sick time. Use it if you need it. You can still join conference's and respond to emails. Hell I can even facilitate meetings from home if I'm sick.

Maybe with the current cultural trend of everyone wanting a desk job

Rest of us who do a craft have to be onsite for the machinery to operate. Thankfully I work for big oil which takes the most ridiculous care of its employees that we have every benefit known to man, and dog

There is no redundancy in your profession? You are the only person that runs your machine?

Seems to me that your big oil company is behind the times in automation and robotics. I can monitor and run your little machine from here if you had the proper technology

There’s 50 of us, and like I said, we have so much sick pay we absolutely don’t come into work. There’s always someone else to cover the task. They don’t schedule us solid. We are a necessary commodity for when **** hits the fan, when it doesn’t, we are on standby.

We keep the refinery running. Robots can’t change seals, pull and rebuild pumps, etc.

Even with all the automation and logic they add, there’s still hundreds of operators that have to be available to keep the process running.

The planners, buyers, office folk that can work from home are also the first ones to be let go upon cutbacks. The guys in my shop have been there for 30+ years. Job security due to being necessary personnel

For now

I'm just messing with you duder

Automation is pretty awesome but for real there still needs that human touch. Besides, automation and robotics are only as good as they are made...by humans....for now

I went from automation to this job. Basically working to eliminate people to a job that’s dependent on the people. Such a bizarre but cool experience.

Feels pretty abbormal to be appreciated every day for what feels like trivial things. But if it keeps people safe and the process in the pipes they reward you well for it.

I'm fortunate enough to never be sick enough to miss work. My mind/body hasn't allowed it to happen. But you can't be worrying about everyone else, if you've got bills to pay.

2018 I missed 1.5 days of work due to sickness. That sickness consisted of puking. I don't miss work due to sickness. It's all in our mind. Get to work feeling like ****. Get your mind on the job and work all day. Come home, relax and pass the **** out due to exhaustion.
I bet I've missed less than 10 days ever due to sickness in my current field of work. That's 18 years worth.
I took off 3.5 days of work off in 2018.
I will not work as many hours this year . My YTD even with all the OT made it not worth the effort and time away from home. But that's a whole other subject.
