yes im on linkedin... for professional reasons only!

I have a few fb friends on there as it's great for some of us to benefit from the networking contacts but it's mostly business friends.

I got a few job offers from there... was about to take the plug on one but decided to move instead.

Yes, but I've been inactive for so long that I can't log in.
I know I have pending requests from H-T members.
This keeps me up at night.

How necessary do you guys think LinkedIn is to obtaining a job these days?

I'll be in the market for a different job in a couple of years. I have a very solid resume as an engineer but no LinkedIn profile. Is it worth my time to start one now?

Does Linkedin work better than Monster when searching for jobs? Or would you say it's about the same or even worse?

I don’t use Linked In to search for jobs… but it’s really easy to connect with people (create business contacts) at different companies that you otherwise wouldn’t be able to (for example, have a friend introduce you to someone in their Linked In network that’s working at a company you’re trying get into).

No comparison really, it’s not really a job search tool.

That's kind of why it spark my interest. I was invited by someone from work (that we would never be FB friends). I mean, there are lots of former or current co-workers that I would like to get in contact with, but that does not mean we are "friends" and I need to see pics of their kids, wife, and/or drunken parties.

I would not use it for job search, but maybe nice to know where these people are (who they work for) - now.

Yeah, and recruiters/managers your applying with will look up your profile, so it’s nice to have that online presence for others to see.

HR in our dept does use it and FB to search to find out more about a candidate. It's not an official thing in the hiring process (or documented), but it's what they do.

I am on linkedin. I've actually received two job interviews from people seeking me on it. And I've received notifications for other jobs I've applied to.

Over all I use it as a professional facebook basically.

Pretty much this. I make sure to connect with anyone I've come in contact with through business so that, should I need to, I can reach out for assistance on various items or put out the word that I'm looking to make a move in the industry. It's great for business networking

This is what scares me. I have neither a FB or Linkedin profile but some other guy with the exact same name does and he's not exactly doing me any favors.

So is HR going to be more or less interested when they search me and can't find me? My resume is extremely solid for someone my age but if you search for me I have essentially no presence on the internet. I'd also like to keep it that way.

It more or less amounts to "he has something to hide" nowadays, so employers may take it as a bad sign that you don't put yourself out there. It's similar to singles trying the dating scene without having a FB account,"No FB? He must be cheating on someone...."

Not on there. Not looking for a job. Not looking for contacts.
Not looking for the added stress of waste me time filling out a silly profile with fancy works and lots of obnoxious hype.

Honestly....I've been at my current position for 8 years. In that time the office was all white. Now, we have one AA, one Hispanic, and one Asian. Today, it's hard to tell by last names anymore. Call it right or wrong, it's how the (real) world works.

Before we go down the road of "hiring someone that is less qualified" that's not the case. Most monkeys can do the job and all are qualified. But it's HR's "job" to introduce "diversity" for the hiring manager to choose. It's not so much one "must" hire a minority.
