Default WWGDD - mechanic leaves car with no coolant in it

WWGDD? or I feel like I'm making a UB thread

cliffs: mechanic replaced coolant hose but leaves car with almost not coolant in it after and car overheats when I pick it up. Asked for $20 back and shop tells me sorry not sorry

I rarely leave my car at a mechanic, but a coolant hose broke off about 1 block from a mechanic I've used before (and wasn't happy with then) so I dropped it off and had them bend me over. Car needed a new heater hose and t-fitting, and various other bits so I had them do it since I didn't have the time to order parts and wait for the weekend to do it. When the work was done, I paid over the phone and told the guy I'd be in after hours to pick it up. I uber over to the shop last night and pop the hood to see if the coolant overflow tank is full. It was bone dry. I should have just walked across the street to get some coolant from the store or brought some with me, but I figured, nah, this shop got 4.9 stars out of 5, they wouldn't forget to add coolant.

So I head home, watching to see if the car will get to temp. I know from experience (unfortunately) that if there's no coolant in the car at all, the gauge will stay cold. Eventually the needle comes to life and I figure we're all good. Then it keeps going, and going. Those MFers... So at this point, I'm running red lights to stay in motion and manage to get back to my garage before the needle gets all the way up to H.

I checked for leaks - didn't see any. So I put an entire gallon of coolant in there. Let it run, coolant level goes down. Fill it again, and repeat the process 3 or 4 times til it finally is fully bleed. Put about a gallon and a half in there and pressure tested it with the engine off and with it running to make sure there's no signs of leaks in the lines or from the block/head. All checks out.

At this point I'm just pissed because I spent $500 for some damn hoses and **** work and could have blown up my motor if I hadn't been paying attention and these dicks would not have been accountable. I called the shop and told them I wasn't happy and I would at least like a refund for the $20 of coolant they billed me for. Owner calls me back and says the tech did a road test and let it run and the temps were all normal and then he explained how difficult it is to bleed this particular car (it aint THAT hard) and that there must have been an air bubble in there. (1.5 gallon air bubble??) He says he wont refund me the $20 for the coolant but he'd be happy to take another look at the car. Nice, no thank you.

Option 1: Ask them again for the $20. If they say no, say how unfortunate it is that you will have to explain your situation to friends and family (i.e. telling everyone not to go there).
Option 2: Complete credit card charge back. Work was not completed as billed.

Mechanics are used to consumers being retarded when it comes to cars. They are used to bullshitting their way through repairs.

I would walk straight in there and demand it, if not you leave countless negative reviews. You sign up the phone numbers and emails to spam.

The resevoir was empty, case closed.

Not only did they scam you out of $20, they could have fucked up your car, badly. I’d try to resolve it peacefully then go to war on them.

When I threaten a business with negative reviews, which has been like 4 times. I say “I’m going to take a week off of work with the sole intention of destroying your business. I’m going to leave 100’s of negative reviews on every site possible from 100’s of different IP addresses behind 6 proxies ( whatever the **** comes to my head to make me sound like I’m a computer hacker.) Your phones, fax, and email accounts will get non stop spam, and if you change them its going to happen to those as well. Give me my got damn $20 bucks back, plus tax, plus another $20 for my time to drive over here.”

Something struck me when I told the guy how much coolant I had to put in there. I said I had to put nearly two gallons in there and he goes - well that's odd, the whole system only holds 7.9 quarts. Hmm well some of it must have boiled off. (W T F DUDE)

Just looked up the coolant capacity - 7.9 qts (1.9 gal) is for the 4 cylinder model, mine is a V6 and holds 10.8 qts (2.7 gal).

I would go with option 2. They botched the job, and something like checking coolant should be prioritized. Plus, it shows the ignorance of the mechanic, if they didn't know the levels of coolant to put in the car.

While attempting to get full money back, I would leave neg reviews.

Mechanics are ALLL thieves.

Yes. I took a pic of the empty tank and the temp gauge when it was running hot.

I would go back to the shop and take a picture of their business license and tell them you are filing a complaint with the government office that issues the license.
I make sure to follow through though. The BBB is a private business with no teeth at all.

What kind of lame *** mechanic or service writer not know how to go online and find the correct procedure to bleed the cooling system? They could have contacted the local VW dealer or even outsourced the work to them. Just leave engine without coolant and not tell the customer? FOH with that ****.

Never go there again and blast them online!

Take coolant out of the owner’s car and see how he likes it.

Happen to my friend who left his BMW E28 at a shell gas station just for an oil change. Car was ready for pick up. My friend got about 2 miles and the motor seized. He called me since he was in my area. I went there to investigate and saw there was ZERO oil. The mechanic at the shell gas station did not put any fresh new oil back into the motor. He ended up junking the BMW. The Shell gas station went out of business and was replace with a Exxon gas station.

you think bbb has any weight? no business cares about bbb now that google is a thing. bbb is a private owned company no legal action can be levied from them.
