There are very few people who are "made" to do this. God bless her. Seriously, what she is doing could change the course of humanity.

And Crazyhouse, tone it down a few notches, sil vous plait.

In space and water deficient environments, diarrhea is a valuable resource. NASA has developed filters and ultrasonic processing methods to extract drinkable water from pee pee and poo poo. Yes srs, no joke.

Well with pee it is the case, i don't know about poo. Poo might need an additional UV irradiation.

Going to mars would be fucked. There wouldn't be medical help available quickly for a wide variety of things, the reduced gravity would *** with you. Simple things like grabbing a pizza or cold beer after hard day working will be rare as ****.

The worlds eyes will be upon you with media wating to start the hate paraden, you'll have objectives and targets to meet and be under the critical eye of your team, the funders, the ones in charge of the mission. There is going to be no one to smang, *** that.

hell no. I'd go insane in an instant most likely.

I cant stand being in a confined area all the time. being in a bubble on a rock that hates you and wants to kill you? no thanks.

I'd experience some event horizon like visions and kill everyone else around me and turn them into my puppets and wear their skin or something weird like that.

they're gonna send people every two years? cool, fresh meat!

but seriously, the second wave of people will probably be burying the first wave after something really bad happens. and then the 3rd wave will bury the second wave...rinse/repeat.

If the people planning these missions have half a brain, they will likely send close to a 50/50 split between the sexes. They will have to EXPECT at least some of these people will be having sex. You can't strand people on a foreign rock for the rest of their lives and expect them to suddenly lose those urges. That said, I hope they pack enough contraceptives, because no one wants to deal with the implications of babies popping up unexpectedly.

if its televised like it probably will be, I can see all participants submitting to sterilization.

I can see it now, millions on tv watching and then a woman gives birth and the baby dies live on tv from some easily correctable issue here on earth. mass global outrage over baby mars death. lulz.

Well, she's still in the running (1 of 705), and now making her rounds on TV in the UK

'Why doesn't everyone want to leave for Mars forever?'

"You ask me why I want to go, I ask you why everyone doesn't want to go," a woman who wants to leave her husband and step-children forever to spend the rest of her life on Mars told Good Morning Britain.

Sonia Van Meter, from Austin, Texas, has made it through to the second round of a competition to be part of the Mars One initiative, a private spaceflight effort by a Dutch company hoping to colonise the Red Planet by 2025.

The current plan is for four carefully selected applications to set off for Mars in 2024, arriving the following year after a seven-month journey.

They will be joined by additional teams every two years, until by 2033 there are over 20 people living and working there.

The entire process will be documented for a reality television programme, which it is hoped will finance the $6 billion plus mission.

It's an incredible opportunity, but with a catch - those that go to Mars will never return to Earth.

Ms Van Meter, 35, who is married with two step-children, was one of 200,000 to submit a video application when the astronaut selection process began in April last year.

Now, she is one of just 705 people from whom the final 24 will be chosen.

She works for a political consulting firm and doesn't have a science background, but she says this is her life's ambition, sparked by Star Trek as a small child and cemented by watching Apollo 13 "a hundred times" when it came out in her early 20s.

"Its the next great leap for humanity," Ms Van Meter said. "I'm tremendously proud to even be a small part of it."

But admitted she is not yet sure "how I am going to leave...everything anyone anywhere has ever know."

She said her husband, Jason Sanford, "has been my greatest supporter and loudest champion, I could not possible consider doing this if I didn't have his full support.

"My step children are impressed, I don't think it is real to them yet, I think it will become more real as the training process goes forward, if I am selected for it...but for now everyone is on board."

She says that it is "horrifying" to think that she has only ten years left with them, but that "this is an opportunity for me to demonstrate to my step-children that there is no dream so great that it shouldn't be chased."

In ten year they'll be divorced and/or hate each other anyway. The problem is the single people, who within ten years will start thinking about "settling down".

Anyway, this is a great project but I think it's doomed to fail. We should probably learn to genetically modify ourselves first to better deal with the conditions on Mars. As it stands, I don't think expecting people to stay there forever and perhaps reproduce makes sense.
