I also found out that if you play your cards right, you can get employee discounts, or things for free if youíre cool and become ďbudsĒ with people. Free cookies and sandwiches at subway, discounted parts at junkyards, etc.
Its free to ask if you donít sound like a bum. I do it to this day just to reminisce.

I grew up pretty poor, so I've done some real frugal **** over the years. Even to this day.

When I was 18 my parents kicked me out, I was just couch surfing for a bit and then got a job on a dairy farm. The stipulation was that I could live at the stinky, drafty farmhouse if I worked all 3 shifts, every day for $4/hr under the table (4a-7a, 11a-2p, 5p-8p). My car was broken, but I was allowed to take the 4 wheeler into town once a week for supplies, so I lived off hot dogs and generic cereal (with milk used from the tanks). No internet, no phone, just a VCR with like 3 movies... Watched that stupid Nick Cage movie The Family Man at least 100 times. That lasted for I think 8 months or so, it was pretty rough but learned a thing or two.

This seems fitting?

Oooh I just remembered that Iíd play Bingo at my apartment complex twice a month. Some of the prizes were $50 and $100 dollars off rent. I went every time and hung out with the old folks. Got free pizza and some money off rent. On my bad bingo days I still walked out with a free dinner and pool floaties, salsa bowls, and a new toaster. Lol this is turning out to be quite embarrassing. Hahah

Not going to lie, I think it's extremely beneficial to for everyone to be poor at some point in their lives for some period of time...while it is rough at the time, I'm pretty sure a vast majority of us can look back at that time and laugh in a way and also carry a new toolkit going forward for how to live in a more practical way. Good thread.

Iíve done some pretty bad stuff. One thing that stands out to me the most is when I walked around finding cigarette butts on the ground. Rolled my own using them. Glad I donít smoke anymore.

I bought a house in Baltimore? There are poorer things I guess, but that decision ranks up there as one of my worst.

What about modifying a Honda? I know we’re all guilty doesn’t get much poorer than that.
