I have a short commute so anything on the market will do. Running errands after work involves going to Target or buying some food.

I wouldn't want anything that has less than 100 mile range in cold weather with heat running. That probably means 150+ on most ratings.

I could do 100 and still make my ~8 trips to Indiana in the summer. I’d have to rent something to visit my brother a couple times a year.

Depends on multiple things:

where do you live? Warmer climates are better for electric vehicles.
How far is your normal drive?
obviously do you have a place to charge it at night?
one last thing for electric vehicles is better to only charge to 90% daily, not 100. So that 310 is more like 280ish, add in heater or a/c and your range will be impacted

For me 300 miles is plenty, but I picked that so I could drive to see family and back without charging. I could get away with less range but Id rather have that cushion

I work at a huge facility and there are electric carts everywhere. Walking would take too long.

It’s not that bad

I think Chevy had it right with their Volts. Run on electricity but have a fuel reserve. It didn't get great range but my friend's 2nd gen got him enough to commute 70 miles round trip and his fuel lasted 3 months or something like that. With new electric car technology, it would be great to see 200+ mile range with a 10 or 15 gallon fuel reserve.

200 mile range if the only purpose was local, but thats too small to use your car for anything of significant distance. In order to not need another car Id think anything under 400 mile would be annoying. The main issue being charging when you arrive at your destination.

Even 150 miles is not enough. When my car gets to 100 miles I get range anxiety.

I would need about 200 miles so I could make it to SeaTac and back...but if I could find a place to keep it charged I could get away with a 100 mile range. Without question, my next car will be full electric, but I'm waiting for the industry/technology to mature a fair amount more. That said, I would rather just have an autonomous car at this point as I'm kinda over cars in general.

IMO best options are:
  • Limited budget: used nissan leaf/fiat 500e/kia soul e
  • Slightly more baller budget: used BMW i3
  • Normal option: New Leaf/Model 3/Used Model S
  • Baller: Model X/Model S/Jaguar i-pace
