Default Spirit Air - any good?

Anybody fly on Spirit? Never really heard of them but their fares are dirt cheap. Anyone on here ever fly with them care to share your experiences?

Gotta take the whole fam bam out to Denver for a wedding in Sept and my frequent flyer miles wont cover the whole thing on United so looking into alternatives. Most full fare flights are between $300 and $400 round trip and Spirits are closer to $200.

Are you checking a bunch of bags and whatnot? That might bring the cost up despite the low fare.

That's what I was thinking.

Looks like they charge you extra if you pick your seat and something like $100 per checked bag if you don't check it in online at time of purchase. All beverages cost extra as well...

If I was going solo this could work, but I'll be traveling with a woman and two kids so no way we'll be able to use just carry ons...

If i remember correctly, backpack only, anything larger and they will literally charge you $100/bag at the gate

I flew them once (3 hours), it was OK. They make you pay for everything.

I was extremely paranoid about the size of my bag. They didn't even bat an eye.

I typically fly southwest everywhere. I feel like I get decent deals and rack the points up quickly.

My wife absolutely REFUSES to fly Spirit Air to the point where even if it was a free flight with points she would rather pay Southwest or Delta to get to her destination

Yea no go, it's a Frontier equivalent. It's like where pilot and flight attendant newbies start and the seats are terrible, no space whatsoever. I went once and they were like please enjoy our upgraded seating! I was like upgrade from what ******* rocks? It felt like I was sitting on cardboard.

I like Delta, seats are good and I always upgrade to the eco seating for like $99. So worth it. When flying, I typically don't like to cheap out.

I like spirit for the quick Vegas hop from Denver. It's literally $29 each way, and the D casino in Fremont gives you $50 of free match play if you bring your boarding pass. The wife and I go out every couple of weeks just for the night, (leave Denver at 630pm and fly back at 600am). No room, no luggage, just roll up, throw down our $100 freeplay on top of our own $100 for 2 quick hands of blackjack. If we win the first hand, we let the $400 ride on a second hand, win that one and party with the winnings. Of the 10 or so times we've done this, we've won 6 or 7, and the times we lost, it was only $100 of our own money. All that being said, never had a bad experience on Spirit.

On the positive side, the bar is set so low with Spirit flights you could let your kids run loose the whole flight and no one would complain because it's par for the course.

The pre-flight announcements are sometimes pretty funny. Old company used to book Spirit for Sema trips because it's dirt cheap.

But I'll never fly Spirit on my dime. Not worth the difference. Delta > *.*

Simply: you get what you pay for.

People hate it because you get nickle and dimed to death .... but aren't aware that when you fly United or Delta or Alaska, you pay for that free bag, for those free nuts, to check in with a ticketing agent, for that free carry on, for the free soda, to have an assigned seat prior to boarding, etc etc etc etc .... those fees are all just rolled into your fare regardless of whether you use these amenities or not. With Spirit, you pay for what you use.

I've flown it once or twice and going in with eyes wide open, it wasn't bad at all. My wife probably wouldn't be the biggest fan though, but wasn't too bad for me. Not much legroom though compared to other carriers, which was what stood out for me the most.

I've flown them. I usually fly whatever airline is cheapest. I also factor in costs like bags, etc.

I'm not loyal to any airline. Just put me on whatever is cheapest.

flown them several times. just dont check anything, dont pick your seats, etc etc. they nickle you to death on extras. also backpack only as said.

they use dc10s. old planes so just pray that your plane doesnt have an issue or you'll be stuck waiting...nay, hoping...they have a backup coming in 8 hours. haha

I flew spirit once. My buddy and I flew LA to Philly to pick up a car and drive it back. We checked no bags and did everything online. That said, it was the worst airline ever. They charge $10 to print your boarding pass if you don't do it until you get to the airport. They charge for everything. The seats don't recline (so they can fit more in). There are no tvs or anything (for kids). Our flight was delayed by over 2 hours which is pretty typical. I would never take my kids on spirit because its going to end up being the same price after all the bags and fees and stuff. If it's adults only, it might be worth the savings. But they charge you to carry stuff on. I only had a backpack, so that was my 1 free item. That said, it was $110 from LA to Philly.

if you can handle not going crazy being in a very **** flight, then go for it. they nickle and dime the **** out of you.

personally, i would rather slit my wrists down the river than fly on spirit.
