Default So the Olympics in China.....was that a bad idea?

I read earlier today how the Chinese government is limiting access to the internet for journalists - even though they stated in 2001 that ""that there will be no restrictions on media reporting and movement of journalists up to and including the Olympic Games". Turns out, not so much.

Previous to that, there are strong suspecions that China is using underage girls to compete in gymnastics. The minimum age is 16, yet records show that the girls competing may be as young as 14. Since the government can quickly lock down and alter public records, seems like it would be impossible to prove otherwise.

Previous to that, it's been said that police have instucted bars in Beijing to ban black and mongolians. Could be just a rumour or a misunderstanding. We'll see.

And of course, China's human right violations against the Tibitian people.

Understandably, government politics and the Olympics should be considered separate. Still, couldnt the IOC have gone with a less hostile country? Japan maybe? They were in the bid. Asimo could have carried the torch.

Discuss.

Bad for the athletes that have to compete in chinas pollution. I know the chinese government said that they would fix the problem before the games started but from the recent pictures I've seen, they haven't help up that end of the deal.

Closing some factories and restricting useage on cars was never going to cut it.

Yeah your right, lets all write to the IOC and have it moved to Istanbul, or Mozambique or Burma, a week before the Olympics happen. Anything to avoid the terrors of China right, since according to you it's full of evil people who lie, cheat and pollute.

Yeah I forgot the rest of the world is so honest in their athletic games as well. Marion Jones' steroid use, nah that was just a myth. Same with steroid use in Baseball.

Isn't China still communist? I have mixed feelings about these Olympics. Part of me says not to watch because of their government and how they treat people, and part of me says the Olypmpics should bring the nations together and it's a time for celebration.

Part me doesn't care what the Chinese do with their own citizens. They are a sovereign nation, let's let them be. Part of me doesn't really care about the olympics either.

The U.S. hogs the olympics. We had L.A. in 1984 I believe it was, Atlanta in 1996, and Salt Lake City in 2002. Let's give someone else a chance.

Is it a free nation? I thought it was socialist, which is similar to communism. I guess I need to study up!

From the amount of pollution and smog alone I think it's a environment for the world's top athletes to have to be competing in.

The olympics are just a watered down, pussified version of a world war anyway. There should be some kind of benefit/reward system for winning/losing. That way, no one has to pretend to care about third place.

Yea over 20 years ago I believe.

Pollution in LA isn't nearly as bad as China.

They have NO EPA restrictions at all over their on anything.

Or robot steroids! I read that the Chinese Gov't. has been limiting the amount of vehicles to try to clean up the air. Way to wait until the last minute to realize you have a pollution problem

I think it's run as a "democracy", but IIRC it's governed by the Communist Party of China (CPC). The chinese people have to follow a lot of rules, and have few rights. So basically the Olympics are being held in the world's largest prison
