Default Side Business

Anyone run their own side business for spare income? I live in a really small town but it's always packed with youth sports, fairs, events at parks, etc....so I've been considering jumping into a food cart. I figure something like a taco or hot dog cart would generate some decent side money at things like Little League tournaments, small business open houses, etc. I've noticed 2 food trucks pop up in the last 6 months at two local shopping centers and they're doing well. It's still early to get in on that up here. Initial investment can be as low as $2k up to $10k depending on how big you wanna jump into it.

I'd be wary of food businesses

Don't want Linda coming after you with a lawsuit because little Timmy ate one of your hot dogs after his soccer game and now somehow contracted Denghi fever

I've read up and researched all that already! You can get about $2M in insurance coverage for about $100/month. Covers just thing type of thing.

Do you need to designate an area to prep/store your food?

While it sounds like it could pay off, looks like a lot of HARD work and would eat up a lot of free time.

Yeah so they say you need to have a designated "home kitchen" that can't be out of your house...haven't read into the full details, but of course there seems to be cheap alternatives and/or loopholes.
As for the free time, this would be a weekends only deal to start obviously. If it picked up I could definitely see it becoming difficult to juggle time. I guess I'm willing to give it a shot just because I wouldn't really be losing much if I just had to fold it up and re-sell the equipment.

It's probably just because of my area but check first whether it's allowed in that specific area. A lot of people jump in this business only to be driven out by local ordinances or something and they get screwed. Would just follow up on the townships as to where it is and isn't allowed. Gives you a potential map of prospects and no-no areas.

Yessir! I wouldn't drop a dime until I spoke with the City and verified everything needed, and IF they're strict about areas and whatnot.
I'd definitely have to "scope out the competition" in said areas as well. But like I said, I haven't seen many up here at all and the ones that ARE running are making bank by just selling fresh good eats. One truck specializes in Philly cheese steaks and they adapted it to make some "signature" Philly fries that are BOMB.

I need to do that but with Dogs or Tacos.

Sam and I been researching this for years, looking to do it full time, and we never go through with it. I don't know if that tells you anything.

It would be fun for sure. If you've got the money you can afford to lose, give it a shot.

I would think of cool gimmicks that set you apart from other trucks. Not only good food but fun things like every 100th customer of the day gets a free hot dog. I walked into a wawa that did that and thought it was the coolest thing ever. If your stand did that, I would go back just for that reason.

Maaannnnn....so I re-sparked this idea by talking with the Philly Cheese Steak truck guy for a minute while ordering food. He's so busy right now he wants to open a 2nd truck and will have to actually hire people to run it for him. And that's what he said is risky because you never know how well someone you hire will keep up YOUR standards of making the food, customer service, etc...and your name is on the line. So then you become a "manager" on top of a food truck owner/operator.

I'd find something you can buy cheap and resell online. My nephew does it and makes a killing with video games. Beats standing at the park all day. Food is too risky, IMO.

If it's not allowed in your area, just hook the trailer to the stang and outrun the cops when they come to shut it down

A girl I went to HS with, this is what her husband does, and she doesn't have to work. He seems to be very successful at it. He buys stuff in lots and resells it on eBay.
