Default RIP Toys R Us

RIP childhood, looks like this is really happening:

Toys 'R' Us will close or sell all US stores - Mar. 14, 2018

Not terribly surprising, given their inability to adapt to the changing marketplace. A lot of this can be traced to the over $400 million a year they were paying to service the debt that Bain Capital(of Mitt Romney fame), KKR, and Vornado saddled them with when they bought them out and took them private. Without that they may have been able to be more nimble.

There seems to be a chance that some of their foreign operations may survive though.

So when do the liquidation deals start? I could use a Nintendo Switch and some video games

My youngest nearly broke down in tears.

They had a good selection, generally, but they were consistently more expensive than other brick-and-mortar stores.

No more "Build-n-Take" anymore.

it always creeped me out how quiet it was in their stores. I also felt like if you made eye contact with one of the scarce employees, they would immediately bolt down another aisle as if you were the grim reaper himself.

I heard the owner of Toys R Us starting working on cars in his garage and everything spiraled out of control as he stopped really caring about the kids

It's pretty sad. Just in my lifetime I've seen Kay-Bee Toys close, Children's Palace (might have been only a midwest chain) and now Toys R Us.

People who only shop for toys at Target and Walmart have no idea what they are missing.

Add another to the list of casualties due to Amazon. And there will be more to come.

I thought Amazon was great at first, now I've kinda backed off that. Was looking for something the other day locally (home speakers, so it would have been nice to hear them before I buy) and realized that no place around me carried any of the more boutique brands that I wanted.

It's not just audio and kid's toys though...a lot of niche places are going out of business because of online. The store experience is something that will be missed in the future.

That’s too bad. It’s going to be rough going trying to find another retailer to match the terrible ship to store, rain check, and other terrible customer service experiences they offer.

I'm sure my parents dreaded going to the toy store when I was a kid. I know I don't really look forward to it now.

It's not so bad if the kids aren't there and you can shop for what you THINK they want, but bring the kid and it's like negotiations - and the inevitable heart break when you explain to them that they are NOT going to get 50 things and that they have to put some of the **** back that they dragged off the shelf.

At least with Target/Walmart you can go there for other things and then take a quick trip to a few aisles and be done.

That said, I will miss Toys R Us because they had a TON of cool **** there that you don't get at other stores.

A lot of my memories from childhood are looking at the toys on the shelves, not necessarily the ones that I got. As long as you tell your kids their budget when you go in, it's usually not an issue (or have them make a birthday/xmas list). I like watching my kids interact and look at certain toys though...they know what they want and like more than what I do as a parent.

one of our favorite things to do was take our nephew there when we visited. He never had an issue when we told him he could only pick out one toy, but it was awesome how much thought into which one he would buy.
