Yes, it's basically the same way you haggle anything else.

Ha, yes! I actually just did that last week and played some serious hardball with my property manager.

That ain't it chief. I just told them straight up that I have never been late on a payment, I have always taken good care of the place, I've never once made a service request, and that I had already started looking and was going to move out if they didn't keep my rent the same for the next year.

If we are talking about an auto lease, yes. My 06 Accord was a lease. It was sort by "accident." It was the Honda advertise special lease, straight up. When the sales guy present the final numbers, I said "wait...the lease payment include taxes?" Oh wait, I didn't know that, and needed time to think about it. I really didn't know that we need to pay tax on top of a lease payment (at that time). The sales guy never explain that the entire time...

Rather than loose the deal, they back out the numbers, The taxes was about $25 per month. So it's like I got another $900 off.

Do dealerships have a lot of wiggle room to bring down their monthly lease costs without telling you to put more of a down payment?

You always negotiate the price of the car before even discussing how you plan to pay for it. Lower overall cost = lower lease payment.

In my example, yes, the down was the same. I was going to walk over $25 a month.

Maybe they figure, being a lease, they will get the car back. Another chance to make money on the back end. And maybe make some money off of me from service, etc, or being a repeat customer. I've gotten two more cars from them since, so I guess the repeat customer part work.

One more thing, negotiation on a lease is easy on a car like Honda. The advertise special for example is a Honda Accord EX 1.5T CVT. Even if you want a EX-L, you have some idea by using the small print numbers to calculate your deal.

It's not like an American brand where there are so many options that you really can't compare apples to apples. And that's where you may need to negotiate the price first. And then talk about payments.

This.

The lease payment is just the difference between the negotiated price and the fixed factory residual plus the money factor (interest). The lower the negotiated selling price (using negotiating skills plus knowledge of what incentives are out there), the lower your lease payment. There's an entire forum for this, https://forum.leasehackr.com/. These dudes geek out on getting the lowest possible monthly payment. There was a guy on there once who leased something like 4 Chevy Spark EVs when it was possible to get them for $40/mo with stacked incentives and rebates. He leased them just because he could and had them just sitting there.

You're not supposed to put anything down on a lease in the first place as a general rule.

Yep everything is negotiable (incl security deposit & fees).

Keep in mind that resale & depreciation really affects the MF.

Thanks guys.

Why would it not be recommended to put a down payment on a lease?

You're technically not saving any money that way and you have to pay more upfront.

if you don't plan to modify the car, or drive it over the allowed mileage per year, leasing is a good option. This is ideal for someone that likes to drive a "newer" car every 2-3 years. Other than that, I would never lease again.

All cars are a waste of money. IMO, whether you pay upfront or spread it out, the end result deal is the same. Back in the 80s, your savings account pays you 8% interest. So it make sense to give them as less as possible. Bank pays you less than 1% interest on your savings today. Sure, 1% is still money, but the lower monthly works better for most.

Based on average age of HT, we are past that, and I assume OP is the same status. It's more about driving the car he wants, and not what saves money. Saving money is buying a used 2010 Toyota Corolla LE, LE because you want something nice.

If the lease was specified as a car I would not have looked like such an ******* in this thread. SHAKE MY HEAD! *shakes head*

And both would be correct. It really does affect the MF.

Hell yes it's possible. I don't even put down payments on leases anymore and never wait 36 months to get into a new vehicle.
