I just can’t see a landlord seeing previous bills at $20, then see an obvious bill **** up and immediately tossing you out over it within days without offering to help you get it resolved.

I have a 3500 sq/ft house and my power bill isn't that much... with a welder. Something seems sketchy

The landlord can try. It doesn't mean he'll get anything. Maybe.

The tenant can sue for damages as well. It's a two way street with no guarantees of anything.

yeah but you were recommending him to just stay there until he gets locked out

I was saying thats not how you handle it and he should go to court exactly because he can fight it

No, it is not the same thing. In California, you have 60 days until the Sheriffs knock on your door. I simply stated his rights as a tenant. I did not recommend staying until the Sheriffs come knocking.

Methinks xcat has too much squatter knowledge.

Though, I did enjoy several years of rent control with an ocean view in Santa Monica when I was in grad school.

Physical removal of a tenant requires law enforcement and a couple of months. You can def squat. Your credit will get ruined tho. As for bill going to $500, well, did the landlord show you the bill? If he did get that bill for your meter and the utility company can't adjust it for you, you're outta luck. How long ago was this bill and how long has this problem been going on?

Landlord has to get the court to order the eviction then the sheriffs can come knocking.

800 sq ft. and in CA so our heating costs are non existent. And our fridge and all that is suited to two people can eat in a month.
Who gets top bunk?

Good point. I think the "fixer" Michael Cohen is out of business temporarily.
