My parents' dog...

My parents have made no attempt to ever train this dog after getting it like 3 years ago. They let it eat of their plates after every meal is finished, and that's just the beginning.

Dog's always been the jumpy / barking / constantly sprinting from one side of the room to the other / knocking **** over type.

In this case, "knocking **** over" = knocking the bby over. bby is 2.5 years old now, but the dog is still bigger than she is. Dog has always pissed me off and I'm never comfortable with it around bby.

A while ago, dog bit my mom's hand - canine teeth punctured both sides of her hand and left a gnarly scar.

My mom says it only happened because she was moving the dog's food along the floor and that there's nothing to worry about with dog being around bby. "It's just food aggression - very common", she told me. Bullshit I say.

My take is that my daughter is ******* 2, she's basically always has food in her hand, and she isn't about to follow "dog rules" reliably. I don't trust this dog even 1% - I don't know a whole lot about dogs, but I'm generally comfortable going up to dogs in the park with bby, asking "is the dog friendly" and letting bby pet the dog. She likes to pet friendly, docile dogs - but obviously she is terrified of my parents' dog because he constantly tries to jump up on her and knock her over.

We've told my parents they can't bring their dog to our place - but now, they want us to come visit for the first time since dog bit my mom. WWGDDD? They have continued to not train the dog or take it to a professional since the incident. They think dog is an angel and completely safe around bby, but if bby got the type of bite on her face that my mom got on her hand, I would never forgive myself. Should I tell my parents we aren't coming to visit unless they board the dog (something they've never done before and have mentioned as "animal abuse" - my parents are insane)? Dog is poorly trained and will destroy a a room and cry the whole time if kept inside one room with no people.

Have them put the dog in the basement or something during your visit.

The dog will cry and destroy **** if he's not a part of the action. I don't really think it's an option to keep it behind a closed door the whole weekend. My parents will also feel that it's cruel treatment and that we're overreacting to the situation.

Other thing is that it was my brother that told us about the bite - I guess my parents weren't planning on telling us that their dog bit someone before we came to visit with 2-year-old. Apparently my mom was "devastated" when she found out that my brother told us about the bite - GTFO

Tell them your concerns and if they put the dog before their grandchild, you know where they stand.

well if that's the case, don't go. If you want to visit, stay with another relative or get a hotel.

Your parents know the dog needs training but won't do anything about it.

Can they, or you, afford to have the dog trained?

Alright, so it's completely reasonable to not let the dog around the kid period, given the situation. Just wanted to make sure.

They won't. If they're the type to say that boarding a dog is "cruelty" then training is probably animal abuse.

Yeah, my mom actually said "cruel and unusual punishment" when my brother mentioned boarding the dog. She gets more batshit by the day. No more visits back home, most likely. It's sad because they live with my 98 year old grandfather who doesn't travel, so bby may never see him again

I don’t even have a kid yet and there are already some dogs I know I wouldn’t let my kid around. Not family, but VERY close friends.

That is extra shitty. Definitely not worth risking your kids safety.
