Default Oakton, Virginia

I know we have plenty of members from this area so tell em something about it.

Possible job offer that would require paid relocation to Oakton. Fair to mildly interested as this is a large project management/public relations job. It would give me a large number of direct reports including legal counsel and oversight with government contracts/negotiation.

So tell me a little about it. It's still technically the South so I don't expect a huge culture shock but what can I expect to be remarkably different from Texas?

First time I've ever considered relocating like this so I want all the information I can get.

From my experiences, Northern VA is NOT like the rest of the state, nor the South. The culture in NoVA is completely difference from Texas IMO, and Fairfax County is an extremely rich and well to due part of the country. I think it would be quite a change from Texas, but not necessarily in bad ways (aside from Traffic).

Congrats dude!

It wouldn't be anything like the south or TX at all, not even one bit.

NOVA is booming right now and is just an extension of DC pretty much, very fancy, nice, trendy, etc......

What they all said, plus LOTS of traffic. You haven't experienced anything yet like 66/267/495.

Oakton ATT office? Yea ive worked there in that building and lived in the area for a long time. You would need to make a LOT more money just because of living expenses in the area.

And traffic. ****** traffic.

You'll get all four seasons, though the winters are pretty mild. Hope you like humidity too.

All true too, Traffic is awfullllllllllllllllllllll, like literally hell.

We have PMS Weather here too, it was 10 degrees a week ago, 55 this weekend and now like 30.

It gets to be 100 during July/August, it's all over the place.

NoVA and Texas are not close in terms of regionalities. You're smart so you will adapt. I think your kids are elementary age. They will love going to the museums, monuments, etc. Join the rat race for a little while then bail out.

Just buy a 1200 square foot high rise condo in Tysons and be done with it. Will only run you around $700k.

Call me if you want to be sure you're not living anywhere near Ross. :-)

Speak with people and listen carefully about where you might want to live if you are working there. You might decide that you do not want to live close by, or you might decide you would rather walk to work...I'm not sure about your preferences, but I assure you that you can go very wrong if you don't take careful advice about where to live.

You know what...you might want to talk to Ross on the phone, or maybe GreenD16, RGuy, or some others who live or have lived not far away.

We do not regard Texas as Southern, just so you know.

You'll find a lot of people in NoVA with the Tidewater Power Drawl, especially people in government.

But the part of the world you're talking about is not Southern if by Southern you really mean Confederate, and it is certainly nothing like where you live in Texas, not by a long shot.

It is an empire. The people won't be so much a problem for you. All kinds of ethnicities running around and having to get along to make the system work...but it's not Texas, not by a long shot.

The people will be less a problem for you than the metropolitan atmosphere in general, negotiating the systems of mass transit and the highways and how they work.

You can go seriously wrong if you don't talk to people about where it makes sense to live, so, please, talk to people.

If you can pick your work schedule to avoid the normal commuting traffic, that is also ideal.

I would agree with that. I lived in Ashburn, VA for about 2 years on a Government Contract. It is very different from the rest of the "The South".

KS, while I dont know your salary now or what this new one would be, to maintain your lifestyle it would have to be minimum 250k. All those fun toys come with property tax every year. Houses in the area would cost 1-1.5 million. Even beer is more expensive here. but skoal is cheap, so there's that.

I had sticker shock when I looked at real estate in Vienna. It's hard to fathom that they are selling tiny homes for a million plus. For that price in California, I can get a house in San Diego that is walking distance from the beach and has beautiful weather year around. But I do understand the demographic and why prices are so crazy in the DC Metro and I think most other people do too...

A lot of us who can set our own hours live out in the home counties.

It can make for commutes that are not always fun, but it can pay off if you manage it right.

Do you need to live in Fairfax at all, if you work in Oakton?

Ross's house is nice but didn't cost anything near a million, so don't scare the guy too much.
