Default My commercial driving test is tomorrow at 9am

Any pointers? I feel I'm very well prepared, my instructor is a retired gunnery sergeant that was with motor T. He says I will be fine, but there is so much that I can mess up on. Almost any mistake is an automatic fail. And it will be pouring rain so I won't be able to see out of my mirrors for the parallel parking and alley docking.

luckily this is just a requirement for my job, which is water distribution. That is never going anywhere.. in 100 years we will still have guys on the ground running water mains and service lines. I'm good on that atleast

It's a dump truck with a pintle hook trailer. That's what we use to haul our heavy equipment. 14 wheels lol

Pointers? Know the info in the booklet you get from the DMV. During my first time I failed miserably. The main reason was the last set of guys to take it had a tester that DGAF. So we went in there half assed.
The second time I knew the booklet front to back. I did really well.

I'm mostly worried about the skills and driving part. I know the pre trip and air brakes well enough to likely bore the instructor. I honestly think I'm going to be ok, but I also know if the instructor is having a bad day, they can fail you on pretty much everything. I've heard some are very thorough and some just want to get onto the next driver. My friend failed 3 times on small technicalities before he even got to drive lol. I'm mostly worried about that

I got to start the truck my first test . That's as far as it went though.
Skills test should be easy. Always check your mirrors while driving. Make sure you read the signs. Our tester just made us back up 50' if that. The rest was easy. But as you said each tester is different.

I nailed the pre-trip, in cab and backing. Barely passed the driving though, loads of traffic and got stuck in an intersection.

Study long, study wrong. With that said if you know the truck and have been driving that should be an advantage over us, we had test trucks that were totally different from what we drove for three weeks.

pre-trip it's all memorizing stuff so, no need to point out. also backing comes down the practice and practice.

driving part, you can get some point taken off, it's the backing that you have much smaller window.

far as driving (vary by state):

-make sure you read the road signs, it's going to be a pop quiz while you are driving.

-make sure you check your mirrors every 5-8 sec (don't roll your eyes, move your head and shoulder to check side to side).

-when passing blocks or intersections, always check side to side (move your head and shoulder to check).

-when changing lane, move our head and shoulder to check the mirrors and blind spots till you finish turning or change lane.

-same for move your head and shoulder while you are turning or changing lane.

-some tester will point out object and ask you to drive like your are crossing the rail track (you know what to do).

-when stopping don't stop too close to vehicle in front of you (far back enough that, you can see back of the tires)

-watch your speed, you will be focus on something else, you will forget how fast you are going.

-also going too slow can cause point taken off, try to keep up with the speed limit in time manner.

-always use two hands to turn steering wheel, no one hand palm turning.

-use 3 point contact when entering or exiting the cab.

-when you think you are going to roll the curb, if you call it before you do (less point off)

that's all i can think for now, good luck!

Thanks guys. iPhone weather says it won't be raining so that's a plus. Then again it's told me it was nice and sunny outside before and there was water coming underneath my front door because it was pouring so bad out. Lol

I passed. Man that was pretty rough. My instructor tricked me by being really nice at first. She put her game face on as soon as we started

No she kind of scared me lol. I feel bad for the next guy that is going for his CDL at my job. He doesn't put much effort into anything so it's going to be a wake up call when he starts training.

I was thrown off on my pretrip inspection because she only had to do one side of the trailer and nothing on the truck. That messed with me a bit because I usually have a good rhythm going by the time I get to the trailer.

Nice job.

I felt awesome after passing, watched a few guys screw up on the in-cab. Super devastated.
