Default modern hip hop is trash

Prove otherwise.

Yes there's some bangers by lesser known artists out there.

But for the most part the radio hits are straight trash. Cardi B, trash. Migos, trash. Young dolph, trash. Lil baby, trash. My god lil pump is trash. Its all repetitive. The same line repeated 8 times in a row to THE EXACT SAME 808 BEAT THAT IS ON EVERY OTHER SONG! Same lyrics, same messages, etc. Cant tell you how many times Ive heard variations of this line just this week on the radio: "shawty gave me head so good i thought she graduated".... I mean didn't lil Wayne come up with that like 15 years ago?
My argument against you calling me "old fashioned" and "shaking my fist at clouds" is recalling radio hits of 15 years ago. We got G Unit, eminem, t-pain (meh....), lloyd banks, ja rule, fat joe, etc etc I mean most of you GDD ballers are in the 30+ age group so you know what I'm talking about right?
I mean, hip hop has gone from questionably bad about 5 or so years ago with yo gotti, Rich Gang, young thug etc etc, to REALLY BAD nowadays. And every ghetto hooptie that drives by my house with the windows down and the subs cranked is blasting the same shitty 808 beat thats in every single song on the radio.

I know this is more of a rant than a conversation starter but I know someone out there feels the same way

Then it sounds to me like you stopped listening to hip hop in the 80s. Ever listen to Big Pun, Biggie smalls, or eminem or tupac? 50 cent also has some albums dedicated to the hard life. These guys came up in the 90s and seldom mention riches

I wouldn't classify any of those listed as hip hop. I would classify them as mumble rap or trap rap. Basically, Gucci mane/Future provided the platform for all these new artists to develop the sound. I like Lil baby because he has a unique voice and his lyrics aren't that bad, Migos some songs are ok and some of their collabs are legit.

Tpain was an anooying pos imo, so the hits back then were just as bad now. Rap has just evolved. Beats take over lyrics, and most people could care less about what the message is in the song.

We still have decent MC's like J Cole, JID, Kendrick, Joyner Lucas, Pusha T, Mac Miller (RIP)

I do also appreciate the more creative and different MC's that change the way rap is portrayed, like A$ap rocky, and Tyler the Creator.

But no, rap will never go back to the creative story telling over percussion instruments like Aquemini, College Dropout, Blackstar, Blackout,

Yeah. Also how does someone like Drake with so much potential still suck so bad? Drake had the startup capital and the connections, and also has a very nice R&B voice and yet still manages to suck ***

It's a weird kind of "minimal" music that I don't really connect with.

A friend of mine is a hip-hop DJ who makes his own music. A few years ago I saw him at a wedding and we talked about what we were listening to (were both huge into hip-hop in HS, Wu-tang Mobb Deep etc).

I told him I was listening to psychedelic/sludge metal, and he was all into really weird minimal techno. I think that's where this trend must have come from, because there's so much less going on musically than there used to be.

The role of the DJ/producer seems to be lessened as more rappers come up making their own beats. I know another guy who is an aspiring rapper, and he does everything himself. There's no Dr Dre or Terminator X or RZA there.
Ross is online now

I knew you were going that route. I grew up in that era (90s). What I am realizing now, when it came to creativity the 80s was that generation. Of course WU took the concept of being creative to another level. And I doubt nay artist will ever be able to replicate it.

The problem with human beings is, they have the inability to think for themselves. Be it politics, food, music, movies etc.

Last night I decided to search for some good artist and I found some. Shame they don't get more views

Have you literally never listened to a lyric from the music you mentioned liking in the OP?

This guy is better than anyone you listed & talked about money & women a bunch.

that was 50s main goal in life , and rapping took him there. He's not top 10 rapper (not even top 20). He just happened to have the ambition/luck to get it and voila.

Agree, he molded his image around his life expereinces. money was the reward.

Biggie and pun had talent, indeed. I can't blame them for wanting riches
