Default Learn Me On VPN's

So I'm thinking of getting a VPN subscription but I don't know witch is best. I have heard they slow your internet way down is this true? How well does it protect you?

The question is, why do you want/think you need one?

Piece of mind, sure. But the reality is that it won't really protect you from the big bad government or make you safer.\

All you are doing is putting your trust with someone else.

Ive been using IPVanish on my raspberry pi and it doesn't slow it down. It's able to stream video fine via kodi. Im just using one of the Chicago servers though, not trying to spoof my location somewhere outside of the US.

Not at all, it's just a private tunnel through the interwebs same as any other VPN.

Correct, but there a lot of differences, all of which a huge when people are trying to hide/protect themselves from the .gov and their ISP.

- You know/trust the provider.
- The provider has to comply with certain security policies.
- You have no expectation of privacy.
- You might not have slowness due to split tunneling.

Depends on the infrastructure and software being used.

I'd say most VPN's being used by companies are cheap and do not allocate a lot of their bandwidth to these connections. Having to encrypt the data being sent will always slow down your connection as well.

VPN's to hide your identity or hide the content you are receiving is false security. ISP's can see what you are doing. They cannot see the content but they can see the your source IP address being replaced when you leave the VPN and then get replaced back to your original IP address when you receive packets (data). If there is enough of this traffic to deem some monitoring by a gov't agency then they can technically get a warrant to have your ISP disclose the actual data that you are receiving.

There is no hiding. You can make it a little harder but I personally think that using these tactics, especially when you are receiving a lot of data can just raise flags because these methods (using vpn's to download) is exactly what your government is looking for.

Right, but you need to trust they don't break those rules they set themselves. No one is watching them.

I don't even know why I have one honestly. It just keeps renewing automatically and I haven't cancelled it. I don't even torrent anything.

Anything other than TOR is less than secure. And even that is becoming uncertain lately, ask the Silk Road owners/

You pay for a VPN and don't download stuff? Cancel that **** there is no use for it. It's useless regardless. False security.

Even this is not 100% secure. Nothing is. You can't change your original IP address in the header of packets. They can be changed when they pass through services like this and the packets as well as the headers can be encrypted but your IP is your IP and it will always be in your packets header when it comes back to your modem.

I had it because I used to use acestream to stream sports and it's p2p, but I haven't even done that in a while either.

TOR is not as secure as it once was.

OP, do you need a VPN for anything important? If not, I wouldn't bother.

Sure, because it's tunnelled; the ISP can't see the traffic that you're receiving, but that puts all of your faith in the VPN provider/service.

CAN97, there's ways around that. NAT, proxies, etc.

NAT is not a workaround. Your router still has a public IP address. It's the address your ISP has given you. So the packets you send out have that public IP Address in the header otherwise the recipient you send your request to would never know where to send it's reply to.

You can try and hide all you want but if someone wants to find you they will

I'm in security, man. We don't read header data.

But yes, you are right. I stand corrected.
