Default Learn me about buying/selling a car private-party

Damn I feel like I've never done this before even though I have, I guess because the last private party car sale I did was 18 years ago when I sold my 1989 Camry to a friend's mom, and then bought my Integra GSR from a neighbor down the street. Best I can remember was - I took my Camry to my friend's house. They gave me US currency for the car, and gave me a ride back to my house. Then I went with my mom to our credit union, got a small loan for the difference in price between the Camry and GSR (mom co-signed since I was 21), and then I presented the cash + credit union check to the GSR owner, and title transfer commenced.

Well that was a long-*** time ago. Now I'm thinking about selling the GSR, and I'm not sure if I will try to find a Miata locally, or travel up to a few hundred miles or whatever. Other than my bicycles (I bike commute to to work sometimes), my car is my only transportation other than my wife's car, but she needs her car during the day.

So will it be better to try to sell the GSR first, then hope I have another car lined up and have told the seller I intend to purchase it? Should I take out a loan from my credit union for the new car so that it doesn't matter when I sell the GSR? Then when the GSR sells, pay off the credit union loan?

I don't know. Other than my wife's car that we bought a couple years ago pre-owned from a dealership, with my own credit union financing and old car trade-in (that whole process went pretty smoothly), I know pretty much nothing about "best practices" for selling a car private party and then buying another car private party, especially when I don't currently have the funds for the new car before selling the current car, which seems to me makes it more complicated.

And yes I sort of wish I could just keep the GSR AND get a Miata, but I simply don't have room for 3 cars, nor am I interested in maintenance, repairs and registration of 3 cars, at least not until my kid is 16 which is another 7 years away.

Here's what I would do:
  1. spend a decent amount of time and detail the **** out of your car and make an actually decent and legit ad for your car
  2. sell it and see how much you get
  3. use that money to purchase a miata or whatever you want
  4. at that point look into taking out a loan for the smallest amount possible

Gonna be tough considering most parts are being discontinued but if its in good condition it should sell. 2 members in the Integra section have bought well kept db8s. I'm sure you'll net the right buyer and just stick to your guns.

Well sure that's what I'm thinking about also. But in the meantime between selling mine and finding something else, I have to get to work, which is a 15 mile bike ride each way. I usually don't do that more than a couple consecutive days in a row. And I may or may not have found the other car immediately when selling mine. And traveling somewhere to look at a car will take up days, also.

Take out a loan. Buy whatever you want now. Take your time making a kick *** ad. Sell the gsr and use funds to close loan.

That's what I've been thinking also. We got a crazy good 1.79% rate from my credit union for my wife's car. I'm wondering if I can get anything like that for borrowing ~$5K or so.

you're not going to get a ton of money for the car, so I would go ahead and purchase the next car and then sell the GSR at your leisure. What are you getting?

How much are you trying to get for your GSR? If your price isn't insane, you'll have it sold in a day or 2. I posted my Integra on craigslist and a few low-buck, race-car facebook pages (chumpcar and Lemons) and had a deal done the next afternoon.

looking at 99-05 NB Miatas. Seen a few CL ads near me for some in the ~3500-3900 range that look decent. Hoping for 150K miles or less. Saw a super nice 2003 "shinsen edition" one but they want over 5K for it.

I have an account with the CU for City employees, since my late grandfather (RIP) was a district fire chief back in the day. I've never seen anywhere with rates as good as theirs.

Actually, that's a decent idea. Plus if you can get an interest rate that low you can sit on your other car a bit and sell it for a bit better price while using the new one to get to work.

If GSR is not the DD, sell the GSR first and then buy the next car after the money is in the bank.

Especially with a car like this and the target buyers, be careful of fake checks. If he's paying with a check, I'd insist on a bank/cashier's check, and that he gets it issued from his own bank so that he can show you the ATM/Credit card with matching name and institution. I'd also take a picture of the guy's license for good measure.

Check with your cedit union, for that old of car with over 100k miles they won't have the same interest rates as your wifes new car... but it does sound like you would be better off getting loan and buying miata first, then put GSR on BAT and get over 10k!

Here's the general consensus: you pay a high school person/intern to both clean/detail the car you want to sell, as well as make an ad on craigslist while you go to the credit union and secure a loan. At that time, you can arrive home to a washed car+thicc levels of cash in hand, which then you can have said intern call and act as your secretary to obtain additional clout and have a 2 vs. 1 situation to negotiate with the other private seller of the miata down to a lower price.

After paying said intern in bitcoin (as a way to reduce the government's knowledge of your coy transaction), hire a second intern to come along with you when you buy the miata to look for flaws while you attack their character and slip in snide/personal remarks to throw them off. The culmination of all that hard work ensures an expedient transaction to which you always have the intimidation factor and limit your own time spent wheelin' and dealin'

Why? My GSR is still mostly stock. Engine is 100% stock, even still has the stock header, exhaust and muffler (25 year old muffler!). And a DC2 and NB have nearly identical power-weight, but with a far superior shifter and handling especially if I put on Koni shocks like I have on the Integra.

Why would I get bored of it?

I've never driven a nice shifting Miata. They blow IMO.

It's funny when idiots (to be fair, not in this thread) on GDD spout BS like S2000's aren't fun to drive but yeahhhh the NA and NB's I've driven were terrible.

Just test drive one.

I am not over exaggerating when I say the Miata 1.6/1.8 engines are one of the dullest engines I've ever driven.

Trust me, the GSR holds its own for a much MUCH longer time than a Miata would.

Where is your location? Miatas are a spring/fall weather car. You'll be freezing in the winter months. You'll sweat your *** off in the summer. Ask me how I know how anemic their AC systems are. Also, transmission + exhaust heat seeping from the tunnel = even more heat
